Why do you want to join this group?

I came here from Alaska, which has become a bastion of right-wing religious nuttery in the last 20 to 30 years. Now I find that my new home is overrun with their opposites -- New Age/Dark Age woo-woo-ism. Is there anyone here who believes in the Scientific Method anymore? Anyone who's even HEARD of Occam's Razor? I've kept checking for a Meetup group for atheists here, and just now found this group. It would be such a relief to be around people that aren't going to assure me that the answer to any problem is in crystals or psychic healing or burning sage leaves. Help! I'm drowning in a sea of irrationality.

Are you tolerant, forthright, and not easily upset when people disagree with you?

This is something I need to work on. I usually don't say much if someone cuts loose with what I consider blatant idiocy (dowsing rods for making decisions?!?) but it's sometimes hard to refrain from (figuratively) banging my head on the table. I think that being around some fellow secularists would be salutary for my mood.

How can you help make this group successful?

Strength in numbers. Atheists make up an estimated 17 percent of the population, but you wouldn't know if because so many of us keep our heads down so as not to become targets of religious proselytizers. I hope that discussions in this group will help make all of us better representatives for the rationalist viewpoint. Frankly, I'm feeling a bit isolated and besieged.

Jo Stephens. I'm a 2-year resident of Whidbey, and working as a gardener.
