Wine, Women and Wheels Bike Event

Enjoy a beautiful August morning riding with other females for the first annual Wine, Women and Wheels cycling event. Five dollars of each registration fee goes to the American Heart Association of Oregon and SW Washington. There are two route choices, 30 miles or 45 miles. Rest stops are at vineyards and herb farms. The ride ends with a chef created lunch at the Hawks View Cellars Winery, located in the hills to the north of Sherwood, on the north side of Highway 99W.

The cost of registration is $81 before June 1.

The routes are not flat. If you are an adept climber you will like these routes. For others, if the climbing gets to be too much, get off your bike and walk, or pull off to the side of the road and rest and relax in the shade.

The short course of 30 miles has about 2000 feet of elevation gain over the first 5 ½ miles. Here is the link: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2336870

The longer course of 45 miles has almost 4000 feet of elevation gain over the first 21.2 miles. Here is the link: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2336859

For comparative purposes, biking clockwise around Hagg Lake, there is about 1,000 feet of elevation gain over 10 miles. So think of the road around Hagg Lake with climbs twice as tall and more steep and that will give you a good idea of what kind of climbing is on these routes.

I am posting the event because it is a good cause and local. However I will wait to see how my climbing goes over the next few months to decide whether to register for the event. If you are a good climber, or have a bike with real low gearing (like a mountain bike or hybrid bike) or don’t mind walking the real steep grades or you are excited by the challenge of the climbs, then this is the ride for you, and you should register right away before the event is filled. I belong to an all-female training group on Tuesday mornings, and there is something special about cycling with other females.

Also, the wine at Hawks View Cellars Winery is primo, very special.
