Meetup and have some Dim Sum

Phoenix Palace was started in 1995 in an effort to bring the most authentic Chinese and Mandarin food to the Phoenix area. Eighteen years later at our restaurant in Chandler, Phoenix Palace has ensured that residents of Phoenix and Chandler have access to the best tasting Chinese food in a Dim Sum presentation.

New to Dim Sum? See this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum

Please arrive NLT 11:15. Once we're seated, latecomers may not have a seat w/ us.

PAYMENT: At each table, we'll be dining "Family Style," which means we'll all order what we want as the carts come through, sometimes multiple small plates of the same item. There'll be plenty of choices!

Since they don't offer individual checks, at each table, we'll equally split the bill for food & tea/soda + tip. Individuals are responsible for any exotic or alcoholic drinks, which will be added to their portion of the food bill.

PLEASE BRING CASH! Usually, the bill is around $16 INCLUDING TAX & TIP, but I'd bring $20, including some ones, just in case.

We were all sooooooooo full and just couldn't try everything that looked yummy ( all of it). We stuffed outselves for just $15 and split leftovers for take-home boxes...WOW ...thanks to the Event team

Bobbie, our table out-ate yours! We only had one itty-bitty leftovers box. Another 5 minutes and even that would have been gone, LOL.

For those of you talking about bringing a $20 bill, bring your cash in small bills, dollars, and quarters, before the dim sum. Dim sum places do not have a dedicated servers for our tables, you just grab whoever is walking by. Not recommended that we all bother the servers for "change" and small bills to pay your share of the communal bill. I have not been to this Phx Place with a large group, service at other dim sum places on a Sunday is horrid and exhausting, so at least be considerate of the restaurant not to bother the servers with 13 people in our party wanting them to bring you change for your $20 bill! Expect a hard time getting someone to even fill your teapots. That is my experience with other dim sum places such as Great Wall, on a Sunday. If you plan to get your change at their cash register, there is often a madhouse of a long line. Like I said, never been to Phoenix Palace, but I am telling how my experience was leading large groups at other dim sum places.

    • Kenton

Thanks, Julia. The servers are not waitresses/waiters and they handle no money. A ten and ten ones would be the best way to come -unless you plan on drinking a gallon of chiu!

"Yum cha," y'all! 2 days out! BTW, Field Trip to Lee Lee Market afterwards to tour the veggie section & discuss uses/recipes and the fish section to make us hungry all over again!

$indi. I have lead many dim sum events at Great Wall for 40 people (4 round tables of 10 each). We will be ordering plenty of dishes that you would have chosen for yourself, so you just eat from those dishes. But I tell people in the write-up that dim sum is NOT suited for vegetarians. At Great Wall, we used to be able to eat there for $7.00 a person tax and tip, IF I ordered for the tables. If I left it up to everyone at the tables to order, whatever struck their fancy, they were shocked that the bill was $11 a person, when it was $7 before, and they asked me why. Remember, our collective bill will be much less if we order more pork dishes, and more $ if we order lotsa shrimp dishes, which are double the price of the pork dishes. That was 10 years ago. Now, I cannot eat dim sum for less than $15 a person. Ken is right, each person ordering a specialty drink, soda or beer, pays the waiter for your drink directly when served so it won't be included in collective bill.

I will need to cancel out as I don't do family style. I only order what I want. I know what I can and can't eat so maybe this will not work for me.

    September 30, 2013

    • Kenton

Hi, we don't want you to cancel. You can order whatever meets your dietary requirements. In the past, we had a vegetarian couple that ordered what they wanted - and, actually, we all enjoyed some of their selections! Please join us!

The key point here is that bills will be presented _per table_ of (likely) 8 people and the only efficient way to handle paying is to split the table's bill. Hot tea for the table seems reasonable; people who order drinks separately should take responsibility for paying for them. Beyond that, Ken is saying order what you want, share only if you wish (I sure do!), but expect to pay an equal share. Family style is not everyone's cup of tea (ahem), no blame for anyone opting out. But Ken is a veteran of these events and he's outlined the reasonable way to handle a per-table bill. Good food, good will, happy event!

Wish I could; I have had so much difficulty getting into our site. That is the only reason I haven't replied previously. I have company this weekend; if they cancel, I will see if it is still possible

Will they do separate checks? I have always gone with my family so there was no need for it. Just wonder how they will do it for a group?

    September 27, 2013

    • Dina

I'm not sure. Ill check into it and let you know .

      September 27, 2013

    • Kenton

Times we went there before, we didn't have a problem. However, whether they let us pay our pro rata portion of the bill w/ cash or credit, or whether everyone just brought $15+ in small bills, I don't remember. (Yeah, I know, you're right - this input isn't very helpful!)

      September 27, 2013

  • Kenton

WOW! Looks as though Dina has to schedule this more often!
