Well, we haven't had any real Cantonese food for a while, and NEW HONG KONG has received pretty impressive reviews for authentic preparations!
You want WILD DINING? How about Fish Maw, Pork Belly, Alligator, Abalone, Pork Stomach, Dried Scallops, Sea Cucumber, and, of course, Pan-fried Noodles, Black Beans, & XO Sauce!
I scoped it out recently and met the family operating this small - shall I say "mature" - restaurant. I had the lunch buffet (fully knowing that it was past its prime at 3:15 PM), and yet there were several really unique & tasty items.
The decor here is not North Scottsdale in any way, and we may have to have the son translate the menu, but WOW!
They were so nice, that they even offered me part of the meal that they had prepared for themselves!
It was a stir fry of pillowy homemade fishballs, sweet Chinese sausage (lap cheong), black fongus, onion, etc. If this dynamite dish was any indication of authenticity and inventiveness, then we're in for one great dining experience!
And, the really good news is that we negotiated a BYOB policy for beer & wine - NO CORKAGE FEE! You just have to drink out of the bottle, a large plastic soda glass, or a soup bowl!
Who cares? We're here for the amazing food, not classy ambience, right?
