Re: [Wild-Foodies-of-Philly] Pokeweed root

Pokeweed is poisonous except for the brand new shoots when they are under 8" tall. Even they need to be boiled in 3 changes of water. The roots are known by experts to be poisonous. I accidentally ate a raw young leaf and got sick to my stomach. Activated charcoal helped a great deal. I read that although the berry seeds are poisonous, the berry juice is good, but I give poke a wide berth. Please get her medical attention.

Hi all,
I hope it's ok to post a question to this list--not sure where else to get good info.
Does anyone know about safety eating the root of pokeweed? My mother-in-law dug up pokeweed roots last week and soaked the sliced root in water for several days, stir-fried it and ate it. Then she didn't feel very well. Would this be an allergic reaction or possibly poisoning that needs treatment?

thanks in advance!
