MOUNT DIABLO: JACKASS CANYON & DEVIL'S SLIDE HIKE! 15 Miles, 3000+Feet.

This location is shown only to members

THIS WILL BE A STRENUOUS hike to explore the steeply rugged and remote "JACKASS CANYON" located in the South Eastern corner of Mt. Diablo State Park. We will also ascend the landmark known as THE DEVIL'S SLIDE*! This hike is suitable for adventurous WILDCATS not intimidated by what will be at times rough & steep "off-trail" terrain.

HIKE DETAILS:
Start time: 8 A.M.
Distance: 15 Miles.
Pace: 2.5 MPH.
Type: Loop.
Elevation: 3000+ft.
Difficulty: Strenuous (for CONDITIONED hikers.)
Hike Time: 7+ hrs.
Fees: $1 cash.
Guests: No, hike is for Wildcat Members Only.

WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, wind gear, Lunch, Hat, Gloves, 3 liters of water, long pants and long sleeve shirt (Poison Oak protection). For this hike, definitely bring your trekking polls if you have them as there will be some steep inclines & declines.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Very fit, disciplined hikers who can handle a 15 mile hike over often steep/rough terrain. This hike is for hikers who love a long, tiring day outdoors! Members willing to answer the RSVP questions and have read the "About Us" page.

HOW TO ATTEND: To attend you must answer the RSVP questions and have appropriate hiking experience.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS HIKE:
Hike will commence at posted start time. Hike will average speed between 2 to 2.5. Hike leader will occasionally call breaks including lunch break. Hike is a group effort so keep with the group rather than go off alone. There will be cross country, bushwacking on unstable & STEEP ground so solid hiking boots and conditioned feet required for this event! Additionally, off-trail exploration will be through areas that will likely include POISON OAK. It would be unwise to attend this hike without: long pants, hat, gloves, long sleeve shirt due to poison oak in the Canyon. Trekking poles are suggested as well.

I forgot to turn my GPS before driving home from the hike, thus inaccurate data.

I guess we'll find out in a couple days the extent of Poison Oak Poisoning. Keeping my fingers crossed.

P.O. UPDATE: I broke out earlier today on my forearm. I'll be happy if that's the extent of it, considering all we went thru. I hope the group is still clean.

Update. I got a little poison oak on my ankle and forearm. Ug. But it's not bad at all, it's already going away.

Peter thanks for adding the gps tracks. I did not get any Poison Oak on this trip surprisingly.

It was a fantastic day of hiking with great folks! Thank you Peter, Bruce Joe and Bardha for joining me today. Jackass canyon had nice views particularly in the vicinity of Cave Point. Devil's Slide (should be called Devi's Spine) was a tough and rewarding climb. Another awesome day of exploration at Mount Diablo State Park!

It was a great hike with a beautiful view of the mountains. Am glad that we all conquered the Devil's slide. Really enjoyed the company - a wonderful group of people. Will certainly go for other hikes in the future. No poison oak so far Bruce - thanks for the magic wipes :-) Dave, thanks again for picking such a pleasant hike.

Better than I expected. Interesting rock formations. A few parts were as challenging as advertised. My gps reports 13.3 miles, 4372 feet of elevation gain, but it has a 15 minute gap of no reception near the start of Jackass Canyon, so it probably understates the milage and I'm unsure how much to trust the elevation gain.

Hey Hoss, the hike was everything you promised, with a little extra kick. Couldn't of asked for better weather or a nicer group of hikers. I had a good time , Thank You.
