Beginning Backpacking Crash Course Series

Wilderness Corps backpack crash course  series is a three part installment geared to turn the intermediate/advanced hiker into a educated backpacker from gear talk to planning trips to actual backpacking . The short series includes a hands-on display of basic gear which will include backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, cooking systems, food and water filtration systems. We will also touch on Leave No Trace, trip planning and emergency planning. This series will end with a overnight trip into Vicente Flat in the Ventana Wilderness (less than 6 miles).

This series is an opportunity for experienced backpackers to share their tips and tricks that may be new and/or interesting to the group. We encourage the more experienced backpackers to share or loan gear; and meet new people that like backpacking as well. If your interested in going with us on some of our back country stewardship trips, or Wilderness Corps backpack trips, come and join us. If your a seasoned backpacker come out and lend a hand and be a mentor.

The series will include the following:

February 22nd --  #1. Basic Gear + Cooking Systems/Food + Water Filtration Systems.

March 8th--  #2. Leave No Trace + Emergency Planning + Trip Planning Basics.

March 22nd/23rd  #3. Vicente Flat in Ventana Wilderness (2 days/1 night)

In the first session of the Backpack Crash Course, we will display some basic equipment including backpacks, tents, sleeping bags water filtration systems and various cooking systems. We will have samples from a variety of pre-packaged dehydrated meals which you will prepare and share with the group. Meals will include entrees from Packit Gourmet, Mary Jane side dishes, and dessert. We will discuss homemade dehydrated foods and food you would not ordinarily think to include for backpacking from plain old grocery stores.

I would like to thank all those that came out, on what started to be a beautiful Saturday and turned into a cold Saturday, and attended our Backpacking Crash Course. We had lots of questions with a lot of information provided. Thanks again to you all!

Incredible amount of information to digest. Thanks for providing the handouts for note taking and for offering to post info online. Comforting to know leadership is accessible for any questions.

Todd, I will have my 14-year-old with me on Saturday. Thank you for welcoming the kiddos! Did you need us to indicate we are bringing as a +1 guest upon the RSVP?

I am sorry I had to remove myself from the list, due to school obligations. I will be teaching Saturday Science on the 22nd. I know you all will have fun and learn a lot. Enjoy :-)
