Hallberg Butterfly Gardens

Hallberg Butterfly Gardens

This is a small but great place to vist. You can spot catapillers and unhatched eggs to photograph along with many varieties of butterflies and birds. I recommend carpooling to this site since parking is limited. The garden is a non-profit organization and does like a donation of a dollar per person. Afterwards we can gather at a local resturant in Sebastopol. As always I will be leaving from Fairfield, Raley's shopping Center, North Texas Street at 8am.

Nestled among the apple orchards of Western Sonoma County, the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens cover nine acres of overgrown vines and thickets, flowering pathways and meadows.

While visitors to the gardens may witness the wondrous metamorphosis of the butterfly, even more important may be their own transformation as they experience a new awareness of nature.

Buckeye and other Species
Fifteen species of butterflies have been seen on the same day: Buckeye, Anise Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail, Mournful Duskywing, Western Tailed Blue, Tiger Swallowtail, Mourning Cloak, California Ringlet, Northern Cloudywing, Mylitta Crescent, Painted Lady, Grey Hairstreak, Red Admiral, Cabbage, and Propertius Duskywing all made an appearance.

I came late due to bad traffic at HWY 37. I had a fun time running after some butterflies and dragonflies.

Thanks to Dennis for organizing this! It was our first outing with this group. I hope Miss Hallberg's heirs continue her mission.

I was not able to get there early but did go later on. I have been before and found this garden very dry and more unkept than before. I would like to recommend Western Hills Garden in Occidental. It does have entrance fee but is beautiful abd well kept. They have place where u can bring lunch and buy some great plants town is just down hill www.westernhillsgarden.com

Ann - the woman that lives there is 97 years old and she is alone. This may be the last chance we get to see this place - before long her heirs may dispose of it to the highest bidder - it will just be another vineyard.

I lived in Sonoma County for 15 years and never knew this place existed. Thanks for hosting the meetup, Dennis!

Even though the butterflies were hiding, it was still an amazingly beautiful area and a wonderful day! Thanks, Dennis, for putting this together! I enjoyed meeting everyone!

Nice gardens during meet-up this morning & I'm able to catch buzzing bees while photographing without sting. Let's do it again.

It's a great place, but when dealing with bugs, flowers, animals it's always hard to get them to cooperate!

For those of you that would like to follow or share a ride with someone else we can meet at the Raleys Shopping Center on North Texas Street in Fairfield. I cannot offer a ride, but maybe someone else can.

At this time I have no plans for lunch. I will most likely be eating in town since there isn't any place there.

Dennis, should we pack our lunch or we will have lunch together at nearby restaurant before heading home.

This is no longer a self guided tour. I will be there. It is going to be a hot day so wear comfortable cloths and bring plenty to drink. See you there.
