Sandhill Crane Festival--Lodi

The Meetup time has been updated to match my last email. If you do not have a schedled tour meet in front of the theatre. We will start there at the displays and then go out to a preserve.

The 2012 schedule is now available. There will be many tours and workshops available. Watch for updates. Tours will begin at 6:00am. I know this early so sign up for time that is convenient for you.

Welcome to the Lodi, CA Sandhill Crane Festival

November 4, 2012

Long before Lodi existed, Sandhill Cranes descended into the rich delta wetlands at the end of a long migratory journey, some from nesting grounds as far away as Siberia. As they greeted California’s earliest explorers, these magnificent birds darkened the skies over winter marshes. In awe-inspiring numbers, and with a prehistoric call, stately gait, and elegant choreography, the Sandhill Crane continues to attract and inspire visitors.

Each year thousands of visitors make their way to Lodi area wildlife refuges and farmlands to experience first hand one of nature’s spectacles. The abundance of crane habitat continues to nourish our agricultural roots, with water, soil, and climate that sustains the birds, enriches our lives, and benefits our local economy.

For 15 years, Lodi’s Sandhill Crane Festival has celebrated the return of the cranes. In partnership with the City of Lodi, the Festival continues this November, welcoming an ever-growing circle of friends to our community to share the wonder of the Sandhill Crane ... and so much more.

First Meetup for me. Enjoyed connecting w those folks who made it to the Theater, and going viewing with several of them. The dispersed character of the photo objects (the cranes at various refuges, etc) was not optimal for a "group experience" however. No mind, though - will look forward to joining for other trips in the future...

Didn't really see much of the festival, spent most of the time out chasing cranes. It was nice meeting everyone.

I plan to go later in the day - leaving Benicia around ten or so. If anyone wants to ride with me, email me. I have a tour reservation at 4:15, so will be finishing late (around 7).

I am signed up for a tour which ends at noon so hopefully I will catch up with you all somewhere along the way, if not, enjoy. When I tried to sign up most of them were full already. Monty: Here is the website for Hutchins Street Square. The Exhibit Hall and Theatre are all in one area. http://www.hutchinsstreetsquare...

Mary, Did you post the right link? ...because that link has nothing about the cranes or the festival in it.

Hi Marcy, The link I posted was in answer to Monty's question below about the exhibit hall and theater. The festival is being held at Hutchins Street Square where you go for all of the activities and meet for all of the tours. I thought it would be helpful for everyone to see the actual venue and even though they don't mention the Crane Festival, it is being held there per the website at http://www.cranefesti.... Hope that helps why I posted it.

Dennis, is the exhibit hall AT the theater? If NOT, could you please change the location AND meet-up time you have posted above?

    Oh, a couple more things...
Lodi Lake has a public boat launch, so if you have a boat, and want to do a self-guided tour of the waterways, this might be an option for you. Although, I'm not sure if the Cranes use the deeper waterways, they may just stay in the marshland. Last, I used Hotels.com and found a $60/night for a 2-queen room in Lodi. For those who want to spend the night, and even carpool and split a room, you might want to look it up.

OK... I've been doing a bit of research, so here's some info...
The actual Festival (with artists booths, touristy stuff, etc) is Nov 2-4th at the above address. Link: http://www.cranefestival.com/

To actually go into the reserve area, and photograph the cranes; you can pay for a private tour, someone else already posted the link.
OR, The Department of Fish and Game has tours at the Woodbridge Ecological Reserve that are scheduled every weekend between now and through December, they are asking for a $10. donation/person. (I have booked for Dec 2nd.) The Reserve also offers self-guided tours anytime, but you don't get to go as far into the reserve area as you will on a tour.
    Here's the links:
    Info: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/...
Registration: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/CraneReg/... I hope this helps!
