Goto Anahuac

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Cold and windy, no sense getting pneumonia rolling around in the mud.

We'll meet around The Shoveler Pond at Anahuac for sunrise, and take things from there.  Should be lots of ducks and snow geese around the park right now.

When I got back from the trip to Anahuac NWR I sat down wrote a short article about the refuge and it has been published on line at www.americanwildbird.com take a look if you will, thanks

    This was a great trip!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting and shooting with the group that came out Sunday morning. There was certainly no lack of opportunities and subjects to shoot. I came back with many good shots and a few great ones, I hope. Thanks for making me feel welcome and I'm looking forward to making another Meetup with the group.

Any sense of what lens range will work?

    January 24, 2014

    • Matt

Never been to the shoveler pond...300-400mm minimum I'd say.

      January 25, 2014

    • Wilfred

It is a wide open "pond" with a board walk. So I would say the longer the better. http://goo.gl/maps/xZ...

Canon is maintaining my equipment right now so Caron & I can't attend. I hate missing this trip.

I booked a room at Holiday Inn in Winnie for Sat night. I plan on checking out a few places on Sat then meet y'all on Sun morning.

    January 22, 2014

We moved the meetup due to the weather, should be closer for you and probably one of the places you planned on checking out.

      sounds good, see you there

Besides birds you might get some good gator photos while your there. I took a shot of some small baby gators that were about two to three feet long, at the pond. At first they looked like a bunch of sticks stacked on one another. When you drive keep it slow, I was trying to set up to take a gator photo ( the gator was in a perfect spot) someone came driving along pretty fast and spooked the gator he went under and I never saw him again while I was there. Also I don't know if this is true or not but someone claimed to have seen otters out there but I think they probably saw some nutras

I was also hoping to get some tips on what to wear to keep out the water and stay dry.

How will you dress for this photo shoot? Also, what other non photography gear should I take?

Is this a beach area or pond/marsh type environment?

    January 23, 2014

    • Matt

I moved the meetup so shouldn't need anything special... When I make it back again I'll be wearing a rain jacket I think. It's on the beach, at low tide sandbars form that you lie down on.

      January 25, 2014

  • Wilfred

Any tips on clothing choice (wet & sand) and cleanup?

    January 22, 2014

    • Matt

Next time I was going to wear a rain jacket maybe...I just wore a fishing shirt and pants and changed afterwards last time.

      January 25, 2014

    • Matt

btw have a look if you haven't, I changed the location.

      1 · January 25, 2014

45 degrees is a little too cold to be lying in mud in my opinion, we're going to be changing locations...I should be updating the meetup tomorrow.

Let me know if anyone want to carpool from downtown area.

      Works for me

      1 · January 17, 2014

    • Amitava S.

I will probably opt to take I-10 rather than 45. The time is about the same, but the uncertainty of the ferry time is taken out.

      January 21, 2014

  • Matt

I was looking at a PDF of the tide charts when I scheduled this and I think I mixed up Sunrise with Low Tide...Low Tide is actually at 5:42am. Tuesday is actually the ideal day as it'll be around 7:30 but I'll also be working.
For the moment I'll say we'll see what we see and we should still do ok for a little while around sunrise time before the tide really comes in I think and can maybe head out to Annuhac or Sportsman's Rd from there worst case.

    January 18, 2014

    • Amitava S.

Which Tuesday? Also is the tide chart available on the net?

      January 21, 2014

I would love to go. Hope you have another meetup for this. I will be in Big Bend then....

I am sorry I must change my RSVP since I will be moving to a new apartment and won't be able to attend the meetup. Hopefully next time I can.

Sunday is not a good day for me.

    January 14, 2014

    • Matt

Sorry, didn't think about it...just looked through the tide chart for the next time low tide and sunrise fell on a weekend at the same time.

      January 14, 2014

  • Gary T.

I should be able to be there and ready to get dirty.

    January 14, 2014

  • Darrel B.

Matt, is that map La Marque location the place where all will meet before going to the flats? That location is still a long way from the Bolivar Flats.

    January 13, 2014

    • Matt

I've fixed it...I guess that was the park HQ. You can make a right at the beach and drive up to the barrier a mile or so down then walk in. I'll say that's a suggested time, I got sunrise from the ferry due to the wait.

      1 · January 13, 2014

    • Darrel B.

I doubt that I will be there. I'm traveling the day before and will be getting home late and most likely very tired. I may buy a skimmer pad and try out the laying down stuff soon, though. Have a good time and get down and dirty.

Unfortunately we will be unavailable that weekend.
