Backcountry travel in the winter can open up whole new horizons for exploring the outdoors. But it can also expose you to new hazards. Come to this clinic to learn about skills and gear to stay safe in case something unexpected happens while you are out playing in the snow. Matt Bradley will talk about skills to make a fire and build a shelter in the snow. He will also give a few basic pointers about avalanche avoidance. Finally, he will talk about the basics of going prepared when traveling in the winter backcountry. Matt Bradley is an avid hiker, ultralight backpacker, traditional skills instructor, and student of nature. He is also Co-Founder of Whole Earth Nature School in Eugene.

Enjoyed the gathering. Nice review of the basics. Matt, from Whole Earth, is a good presenter. Need to see if REI will over single-topic specific classes; half/full day workshops. One hour would suffice.

My favorite tip from this class: Make a cup of tea. Cheers!

I think for myself, I was expecting something a little more detailed into winter camping, snow camping, and things like that. The presenter did have some good slides and information, but it seemed to lack a little in some parts. That's just my opinion. I also know that he isn't the regular presenter at REI.

Tina, a lot of the classes that you will see on here, are taught by REI. I see them as great opportunities for members of the group to attend and to learn new skills and tips about the outdoors. It doesn't take much to sign up for the classes. Honestly, it's as easy as clicking a few buttons on REI's website, or simply calling them. Once you are registered with them, then click on the class on here, and say that you're attended. It's as easy as that.

    Tina –
You are in luck; I have a scheduling conflict and will not be able to attend the Survival Skills that is put on by WVO, and REI so you can have my spot. Matt, can you tell me what I need to do to withdraw my REI registration?

You can call the Eugene REI and let them know. Thanks for updating your RSVP, greatly appreciated.
