Biking - Row River Trail

The Row River Trail is 15.6 miles and connects the City of Cottage Grove to Dorena Lake, Culp Creek and the nearby Umpqua National Forest. The trail traverses a variety of landscapes that include: urban lands; pasture and farm land; timber lands; Dorena Lake shoreline; and the Row River.

The Currin Bridge

The trail width varies from 8' to 10' and the trail corridor is approximately 135 acres. Lands adjacent to the trail are owned by Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Dorena Lake), and private land owners. The trail is paved and grade does not exceed 5 percent. Curves along the trail are banked to help bicyclists maintain their balance and allow for proper drainage. The trail and facilities along the trail meet or exceed standards for accessibility.

The Row River Trail provides access to an extensive network of forest trails managed by the Umpqua National Forest, as well as a link to the towns of Cottage Grove, Dorena Lake, and several rural communities in Lane County.

Historical features along the trail include three historic covered bridges: Mosby Creek Bridge (1920), Currin Bridge (1925), and the Dorena Bridge (1949) are all located near or adjacent to the Trail. Other historical features include retrofitting of the existing railway bridges that include Mosby Creek Bridge (1902) and the Row River, Rat Creek, and Teeter Creek bridges (1940s). Additional historical and cultural features include a historic homestead and old movie sets for the popular films "The General," featuring Buster Keaton, and "The Wedding Tree."

Special thanks to American Trails for the information on the Row River Trail.

Directions: From I-5 in Cottage Grove take Exit 174 toward Dorena Lake. At the end of the offramp, turn east on Row River Road. Drive one mile east on Row River Road and then turn right on Currin Conn Road. Immediately after this turn take a quick left on Mosby Creek Road. Go two miles southeast on Mosby Creek Road and then turn left on Layng Road. Just after this turn take a quick left into the Mosby Creek Trailhead parking lot. Parking is also provided at these primitive trailheads: Dam Overlook, Row Point, Harms Park, Dorena Covered Bridge and Culp Creek.

Details: We will meet at the Mosby Creek Trailhead and head out from there.  I would like to start at 9:30AM, and ride along the trail for awhile, before finding a spot to take a lunch together.  Plan on taking a few hours and enjoying the scenery along the way.

Please pack a lunch for the afternoon, bring water, a spare tube, and anything you may need for the day.  If you have a truck or trailer to help transport all of the bikes, please let me know.  Thanks.

I had a great time--SO glad I went! I'm so sorry delayed the group. It really was a lovely ride (even with that intense deluge!) and I plan to go again soon. Yesterday, a friend gave me her old GPS thingy. Navigation is an issue for me 8-)

We looked for you during our ride. Occasionally would take breaks at various spots for pictures. Stopped off at the Dorena School to have our lunch. We must of just missed crossing paths.

I went left from the parking lot, crossed the two bridges, and rode along the lake. I got to the grassy wetland area at the end of the lake, when the heavy rain came. Since I wasn't sure where I was, I turned around at that point. When I got home, I saw a map and realized that I had gone more than halfway around the loop. Next time! I seriously enjoyed myself and I'll go back. It's a great change of scenery for me, since I always do the river loop. It was fun to imagine the train running through there. I'll bet the people who live there much prefer bikes to trains!

OhMyGosh! So much fun!! Those who didn't make it missed out on a great day with a great group of people. Thanks for organizing it, Matt!

      Yes or no?

  • Matthew H.

Those that still want to go, we can try for it. I'll be at Best Buy and go from there. If I get to Best Buy and it starts pouring, then I'm calling it a day.

So what time to you plan to be at the trail head?

I'll be there. My cell: [masked]

These downpours aren't looking too promising. I don't mind the rain, but this bike ride would be a lot more enjoyable on a sunny day. What are your thoughts?

    2 · May 9, 2014

    • David Y.

I did my garage saling today so I'm in Saturday or Sunday. My mother lives to far away and my poor wife has to work. Rain won't scare me away.

      May 9, 2014

    • Matthew H.

It would be tomorrow or later in June. I have plans on Sunday to spend time with my mom.

      2 · May 9, 2014

  • Kathy

I'm sure Sunday will be better weather-wise, however I won't be able to attend on Sunday. Gotta be the dutiful daughter! I'll be there Saturday if it's not rescheduled.

    1 · May 9, 2014

    • Matthew H.

I can't do it Sunday, as I will be with my family. So, it's either tomorrow, or later into June.

      May 9, 2014

  • Zoë B.

I'm declining due to the weather.

    1 · May 9, 2014

  • Kim P.

Matt: How about if you make the decision in the morning @7 and announce it here. I'm still interested, unless the weather is TOTALLY miserable. We can re-evaluate all of that in the morning.

    2 · May 9, 2014

    • Matthew H.

That should work, as long as those that have signed up are sure to check on here for the decision. I drove back from Florence this evening, and it was nothing but downpours. Could barely see the road. I'm hoping things look better in the morning. Thanks.

I'm not going to make it either :( City wide garage sale and I agreed to help with the sale benefiting the Ferret Shelter. Have fun.

Sorry I have to bow out of tomorrow's ride. I had a small medical procedure on Thursday, and doc sez to chill for 48 hrs. Have a good ride everyone!

    1 · May 9, 2014

Is anyone else going to Best Buy? It sounds like we are having a lot of people driving down and meeting at the trailhead. Carpooling would save on gas, and eliminate the number of cars in the parking lot.

    1 · May 6, 2014

  • Christine N.

I hope you all do this ride again when I get my stolen bike back... or get a new bike. I am so bummmmed to be without my bike!!! (It was stolen, cut cable lock, on April 30th Wed. in Eugene.) Maybe it will be found: JAMIS Aurora touring bike, white/cream and bronze/brown, blue drop handlebars, front and rear black racks, rear fender, clip-in pedals,... thanks.

    1 · May 5, 2014

    • Matthew H.

Sorry to hear about your bike being stolen. I hope you are able to track it down and get it back.

      May 7, 2014

  • Kim P.

I have no idea how to get there. I'll meet you wherever you want. I do need to follow you there. I'm in the 18 x Chambers area, but if you want to meet at BB, I'm fine with that.

    May 6, 2014

    • Matthew H.

I would appreciate if people would meet me at Best Buy. We all live in different areas. I understand that. That is why there is one spot picked to meet at and leave from. It assures that the group is together and arrives at the event at the same time. Also, the directions are listed in the write up.

      May 6, 2014

  • Kim P.

According to this morning's (TU) Register-Guard, there will be a big event there on SAT: Bike to Blooms. It's a wildflower tour, with two starting times: 9:00 and 10:00. The paper says they are limiting this event to 20 people. SO....the parking may be a challenge. Is there another point that we could park and get on the trail? Or is there plenty of parking? I plan to join you at Best Buy and then drive myself up, following you.

    May 6, 2014

    • Matthew H.

Why don't we just meet at Best Buy, drive down and take it from there? Keep things simple. There is decent parking, and if we carpool, like I was hoping, we shouldn't have so many cars to worry about. Part of why I would like to meet in one spot, and go from there.

      May 6, 2014

  • Vivian

I will meet the group at the Cottage Grove trailhead as well.

Sorry to not reply sooner! Been extremely busy! But I do need to bow out this weekend, have had a lot on my plate. Have a wonderful time and hope to meet and join in soon in the near future :)

    • Julie R.

Mona-I had to bow out. I had signed up for the Pedal for the People a fundraising ride for OSLP and didn't realize it was the same date. I do this ride every year...It sounds like there are plenty of people who can carry bikes.

      May 6, 2014

Just to let people know, I don't even live near Best Buy. I picked the spot about two and half years ago for this group to meet at for events. I will continue meeting there for events, and I will not change that. If we are heading to the coast, I will meet at Target on West 11th. I do understand that it may not be close to your house, or convenient to each and every person, but there was more to it than that when selecting the spot. Best Buy has a very large, well lit, and easily accessible parking lot. It is located just off I-5, which it makes it easy for people coming from out of town. It is also easy for people that are new to town, that don't know very many of the street names in Eugene. All things I considered when selecting the spot. It also is located near several gas stations and coffee shops, which is convenient for those seeking it before a trip. Please understand that a spot is picked to best suit everyone, not just you.

Can we meet on south side of Springfield/eugene instead of the north side? Thanks Matt for setting up such great trips for the group. I just want to join the move the carpool spot:).

I'd like to join this bike trip, and prefer to carpool from the south end of Eugene, too.

You are more than welcome to join us. We meet at Best Buy for our trips. Have been for over two and half years. It's a spot I use for this group. It's where I will be to meet people. Thanks, and hope to see you join us.
