Mountain Biking - McKenzie River Trail

The McKenzie River Trail runs 26.5 miles from Clear Lake, past Tamolitch Pool, Sahalie and Koosah Falls, and on down to the trailhead near the Ranger Station. The trail is very scenic, with much of it within a few feet of the river. It offers a great variety of terrain for both beginners and experts, without a high degree of difficulty. Some areas along the lava rocks require more skill, or can be avoided all together.

Details: I would like to ride as much of the trail as possible, or at least make head up to Tamolitch Pool and back. I have ridden the trail before and it is an amnazing experience. We can meet at the Ranger Station and ride out and back. There are many places we can stop to take a lunch, such as Belknap Hot Springs, Tamolitch Pool, or any of the campgrounds along the way. Plan on packing a small lunch and enjoying the trail for most of the day.

I would prefer a day of sunshine, as riding the trail while wet and muddy just creates ruts and tears up the trail for others. So, please keep that in mind.

We can meet at the Ranger Station at 10:00AM. Anyone that has a trailer or a truck we can use to transport the bikes, please let me know. We can also carpool from Eugene and Springfield.

8:15Am at Best Buy. That should give us enough time, right? Everyone else, see you at the Ranger Station just before 10:00AM. We will go from there.

We'll be leaving from the Santa Clara area in the am, would be room for a bike on the back of the truck but the back seat is tiny. Also we will be parking at the trail head(end) parking lot

Erin, I know the trail starts there, but we are going to the Ranger Station. More parking and easier to find each person if they are coming on their own.

I will bring my car to Best Buy, and will be able to car pool anyone that needs it. I took a big digger on my mtn bike the other day, and my back needs a rest from biking. But I am up for a hike and some fishing on the McKenzie. Folks can bike and meet me back at the Ranger Station after they are done.

I'd like to car pool from Best Buy.

Right now, it appears there will be just 5 of us. Thinking of taking my car instead of my brother's truck. We can put the bikes in one truck, and people can split up between two cars. Also, who would like to meet at Best buy beforehand? Around 8:15AM to 8:30AM. Please let me know. Otherwise, see everyone at the Ranger Station before 10:00AM.

Hey All, I have a small wagon that can take two bikes and 2 people. Is your truck full, Michael?

I can take 3 along with bike

The truck has room for just one person, but I can take quite a few bikes. That could help with the carpooling, for those with no bike rack.

It looks like it will be wet and muddy. Which can be a lot of fun. I suggest bringing a set of clothes to switch into, for stopping at Takoda's to eat, so we don't track mud into their restaurant. Also, to keep mud out of the driver's cars. Thanks.

Matt, I'll drive my truck. I can take 3 or 4 depending on how friendly the three in back are. I can fit the bikes in the back.

We can plan to meet at Best Buy around 8:15AM and leave by 8:30AM. That should get us to the Ranger Station by 10:00AM to meet others coming from other areas.

I'd really like to try this. Never mountain biked before. I'll have to see if I can rent a bike. Please let me know if you think a total novice would be inappropriate. :-)

Try getting in some kind of riding first. The trail is great for novice and experts alike, but simply to get yourself ready for riding on the trail and putting in some miles.

I can haul 4 bikes on my hitch mounted bike rack. We'll figure out a plan by then.

Any risk of snow do you think?

    March 28, 2014

By then, there shouldn't be. I will watch the weather and post an update a few days before. Also, this will be just the first of what I hope to be a monthly ride along the trail. Thanks for the question.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
