Hiking - Mount June

I figured it would be fun to hike Mount June on the first day of June. A scenic 2.4 mile round trip hike with 900' of elevation gain, out near Dexter.

We will leave from our normal meeting spot in the morning and carpool together to the trailhead. Please pack a lunch to enjoy, along with your ten essentials and anything you will need along the trail for the day. I recommend at least two liters of water for hikes.

Please allow time for all hikers to hike at a moderate pace and take pictures at their own leisure.

Trail Information: A former lookout site, the summit at Mount June is the area's tallest peak at 4,618ft. The hike is short at 1.2 miles from trailhead to peak, but there are some fairly steep sections.

The hike will take you through a Douglas fir forest with rhododendrons scattered throughout.

From the top you will get nice views of the Three Sisters as well as Diamond Peak.

Driving Directions: Take I-5 south of Eugene to Oakridge Exit 188A. Then follow Highway 58 east for 11.2 miles to Dexter Dam and turn right at the sign for Lost Creek. Go 3.5 miles to Eagles Crest Road and turn left over a small bridge. Take Eagles Crest Road 7.6 miles toa fork and veer left following the brown hikers sign. This is Road[masked] and you will take this 2.6 miles to where the pavement ends and continue on on this road another 3.5 miles of gravel. You will then come to a small triangle of roads on the left. Take either left, the first or second one, they meet up in a few short yards. This is Road 1721 and you are only on this for .1 miles to Road 941 on the left. This road is somewhat steep and rutted and may not be the best for low-clearance cars. Take this road .4 miles to the trailhead sign on the right.

Hope to see you on the trail.

If the weather tomorrow is anything like today, we will have some amazing views. I'm looking forward to the hike, and meeting a lot of new people. This will be our second year of kicking off June with a hike on Mount June. For those new to the area, you can find Best Buy just off of I-5, on Gateway, at the intersection with Starbucks and Panda Express on opposing corners. I hope that helps. See everyone in the morning.

OK what are "your ten essentials"

    May 21

    • Matthew H.

The ten essentials are the ten most important items every hiker and backpacker should carry on them for each hike. Ten items that will help in any situation, regardless if it is a two mile day hike, or a week long backpacking trip. http://www.meetup.com...

For those that were planning to meet us at the trailhead for Mount June, instead of at Best Buy, I'm asking that you don't. Please meet us at the Hardesty Trailhead parking lot along Highway 58, near milepost 21. Be there by 9:00AM and ready to go when those coming from Best Buy pull in. I'm thinking shortly before 9:15AM. From there, we will all drive up to the trailhead for Mount June together. Thanks.

There will be an option of extending the hike to Sawtooth, for those that would enjoy a longer hike for the day. I will be leading that, for those that are interested.

    • Sandy

What kind of elevation gain do we have with Sawtooth?

      May 19

    • Matthew H.

There isn't any gain after going up to Mount June. The trailhead is at 3700', Mount June sits at 4618', and the meadow for Sawtooth is at 4000'. The trail up to Mount June does have a few sections that are steep.

Matthew is the hike steep like mt. Pisgah?

    May 18

    • Matthew H.

Yes, it can be compared to Mt. Pisgah. It has a few steep sections. The trail gains 900' of elevation in just over a mile.

Hi fellow hikers, is anyone going by the downtown area on the way to best buy? Claire and I could use a ride over to best buy, (Matt, if we take the bus we will get there 15 minutes late)
