Hiking - Spencer Butte

Spencer Butte is a dominate landmark on the southern border of Eugene.  The butte, as it is referred to as by local hikers, stands at 2055' with a panoramic view from its summit.  The butte has a great hiking trail that winds along through the tall Douglas firs that climbs to the top.  At just 2.3 miles round trip with 800' of elevation gain, the hike is suitable for all ages.

Directions: From downtown Eugene, take Willamette Street heading south as the numbered streets increase.  Follow Willamette Street to the right at the fork in the road shortly after 29th, where it splits with Donald.  Continue on Willamette Street up the hill, passing the lower trail that is marked "Ridgeline".  The parking lot for the butte is on the left, shortly after Camas, a private street.  You should see a green sign on the left marked "Spencer Butte Park", like the picture below.  The parking lot is large and paved.  If it isn't paved you are at the wrong spot and need to head further up Willamette Street.

We will meet together at the stairs and hike up the trail together.  Be sure to bring some water and good hiking shoes or boots that can get muddy, along with a headlamp or flashlight for the hike down.  The trail is heavily used and can get muddy as well as slippery. We will take some time at the top to sit and enjoy the views, relax, talk some, take pictures, before we head back down.
