Camping - Sutton Lake

  • November 5, 2011 · 9:30 AM

A fun weekend of camping together on the Oregon Coast. Enjoy walks on the nearby beaches, a day hike, and s'mores around the campfire.

Sutton Lake is located just five miles north of Florence.  A large campground, with open space to enjoy tossing a frisbee or football, easy walk along the creek to the beach, and so on.

I'm looking into renting a few spots at Sutton Lake Campgrounds, north of Florence. We would leave Eugene early Saturday morning around 10:00AM and meet at the campgrounds for those coming from other areas. After setting up camp we can do a day hike with a great view of the coastline. We should return in time for a potluck dinner. Sunday morning we can enjoy a good breakfast together then take a long walk together on the beach before returning to camp and taking things down for checkout. I expect us back in the evening on Sunday. Possibly stopping at Mo's in Florence for some seafood. I will add more details and information as I get them.  We can pair up to split the fee of each campsite.  As more people sign up, we can look into getting more campsites, or even the group site.  Expect to split about $22 a night for camping.  We have planned to do a potluck style dinner for Saturday night.  Please bring some type of small main dish to share, or something to cook and share.  Indicate in the comments what you plan to contribute.

Contact: Matt Howell - (541)[masked]

I will be bringing a extra tent and two air mattresses to loan out.  I also have a cooking stove, and some coolers, and chairs.  I will bring enough food to contribute to a large country style breakfast for Sunday.  Please let me know what you can contribute.  Thanks.

Things near Sutton Lake: The actual lake is across the highway from the campground, but is accessible by a hiking trail along the creek.  There is also a trail leading out to the beach from the campground.  Florence and its gift shops and Old Town are just 5 miles south.  We can do a day hike, go fly kites, explore along the lake, drive into Old Town, maybe even go rent a few sandboards from Sandmaster Park, to share.  I have sandboarded before, and it is a lot of fun.  It's like snowboarding on the sand, and it doesn't take any special boots or equipment.  Just a good attitude and patience.

Hope to have a great weekend at the coast together!

I had a fun filled weekend. Enjoyed meeting a few new people and spending time with everyone. I had a great time around the campfire sharing stories and some amazing food. It was great that we were able to help Katie and Susanna celebrate their birthdays during the trip. Thanks to everyone that came and enjoyed the weekend together over on the coast. I hope to do trips like this regularly.

The wonderful evening and following morning beach hike more then made up for the initial drizzle. Thanks Bill B for spotting the camping spaces, and the wonderful breakfast! Thanks Matt for organizing this trip. Thanks to all for being wonderful company! :)

Susanna - I have your running shoes. I mistakenly thought they were Katie's, and put them in my truck. I can meet up with you with them tomorrow, or simply bring them with on a sunset hike.

I couldn't have asked for a better weekend of camping and frivolity. Great food and campfire fun! The stars late last night were such a wonderful surprise...and the sun on the beach today was glorious. Thanks to everyone for making this a wonderful 42nd birthday celebration!

Anyone by chance pick up a blue and white pair of mizuno running shoes in camp? I cannot find them {:(

Hey Matt, yes tent and air mattress please!
    Thanks!

    November 4, 2011

William - Do you or anyone else still need me to bring an extra tent or air mattress for you this weekend?

    November 4, 2011

  • Maria

I'll be coming on Saturday, with Erin and Ashley, so no need to wait for us at Target. Got my kayaks loaded and ready to go. Looking forward to this weekend!

Susanna - Leaving cars there should be fine. There is a spot on the north side of the store that is out of view from the street, and there is video cameras for security. I'll see you and the others Saturday morning. I will most likely be in a white Suburban instead of my usual car. It's too bad some people have backed out of the trip. Hopefully it isn't due to the thought of some rain. Should never let the weather ruin a good time.

Looks like all the Friday people dropped out, so I'll only get one spot for tonight, then a second, adjacent spot for tomorrow. If anyone does come tonight, look for the small, white, Scamp trailer, and feel free to set up your tent if I'm not there. See ya'll tomorrow.

    November 4, 2011

  • Susanna

I will be going saturday, as will Will. See you at Target. Is it safe to leave cars there overnite?

I will be arriving Saturday around lunch with Matt. I'll be bringing my new tailgating gas grill. So, if anyone wants to bring grill-ables you are welcome to help me test it out! Sounds like we're pretty set on Saturday night for food. I'll at least be bringing something grill-able to share for Sunday breakfast - probably sausages and toast.

I will be meeting and leaving with every one on Sat. at 9:30 am.I have room in my car for one maybe 2. Bill

I'm leaving Friday morning by noon. I think we'll have electric, but I'm not absolutely sure. Bring your crock pot, Susanna, and you can use it in the trailer if we do. I'll try to get 2 adjacent spots if possible.

Current weather forecast for the weekend in Florence/Sutton Lake: Friday 54/43 and a 20% chance of rain; Saturday 50/45 and a 70% chance of rain; Sunday 54/45 and a 60% chance of rain.

    November 2, 2011

  • Maria

I was going to come on Friday evening, but I think I may end up coming on Saturday. I can let you know for sure tomorrow.

    November 2, 2011

  • Maria

Ashley, I thought you and Erin were coming on Friday?? :(

    November 2, 2011

  • Susanna

I am heading out Friday, and Will is carpooling with me. See you Saturday, Matt!

    November 2, 2011

  • Matthew H.

Since there are people heading over on Friday and another group heading over on Saturday, can people please indicate in either a comment or an email which day they are going? It will help me know who to expect to meet on Saturday. Thanks everyone. See you Saturday.

    November 2, 2011

  • Ashley

Erin and I will be heading out at a TBD time on Saturday, so don't wait for us at Target. We'll be bringing all the fixings for Hobo potatoes for Saturday's dinner and blueberry pancakes for Sunday's breakfast.

    November 2, 2011

  • Susanna

Bill, do you have electrical hookup and a slo-cooker for the trailer for making chili?

    November 2, 2011

  • Roy W.

I'll leave my name up for now but it's very unlikely that I'm going. I'll probably be working and/or apartment hunting this weekend.

    November 1, 2011

  • Matthew H.

Also, try to carpool as much as possible, they charge $5 for the second car at each campsite. So we will need a few sites. Splitting $22 for an electric hookup site is rather cheap when split between a few to each site.

Sounds like everything is coming together nicely. The campgrounds has wood available to purchase, and I will try and grab some maple I have at home to use. I will be showing up on Saturday, with others that will be staying for just one night. I can pack a lot into a weekend. I'll have two different soups available for the potluck dinner. Will also have some snacks to share. Kayaking sounds great. I think the campgrounds limits tents and people to a site, so keep that in mind.

Susanna- It should be a fun trip! I think Jenn is coming out on Friday as well, and so is Roy. So I'll probably drive. I get out of my work meeting at 4 so we'll probably leave town about 4:30 or a bit after. I'm pumped!

    October 23, 2011

  • Susanna

Andrea and Will, perhaps we can ride together and caravan out with Maria for Friday since it looks like 4 is about the time we can all get together. What do you think? Will Jenn be coming out Friday as well? I am so excited...last year I had a camping trip planned over my b-day weekend and ended up camping on my couch, ill. Not this year! {:P

I will be staying Sat. night, leaving with every body, bringing my car,I can take 1 other person (sleeping in it ,1 nite is not worth tent hassel). For Sat. nite supper,I will bring desert, but won't eat patato soup (patato prob.).I will chip in $ or what ever for breakfast . I'm also bringing- 1 pic. table bug and rain tent and 1 fold up plastic, 3 gal. water jug you hang from tree to wash hands and ect. Thanks Bill

    October 22, 2011

  • Maria

Ill be leaving around 4 too, but I only have room for one extra in my car since I'll have my dog plus the boats. I'll be bringing a stove on Friday.

    October 22, 2011

  • Andrea Brown (.

I have a work meeting until 4 on Friday but will plan to head over after that. Since Matt won't be there Friday night, does anyone have a stove they're bringing or should I bring mine?

    October 22, 2011

  • Susanna

I can take up to 4 people in my car as well. I do not mind paying for a second site for Friday nite to be sure we have room for everyone. I will be in my tent Friday nite...there is room for one more. Sorry, Bill, but I am not yet in that stage of life where I can camp in a trailer! And... I miss the smell of my tent {:P I will plan on leaving around 4pm.

I can take 4 people in the car, with all the gear in the trailer if needed. I do want to leave around noon, though. Maybe Maria can drive the people who can't leave that early? Boating sounds great if the weather's OK, but it's not exactly summer any more. Let's check the forecast before bringing the boats.

    October 21, 2011

  • Maria

William you can rent paddles, life jackets and even kayaks at the UO Outdoor Program - its very inexpensive and open to everyone.

    October 20, 2011

  • Maria

Count me for Friday night - I'll probably be arriving at around 6ish. I'll be sure to bring both of my kayaks, and I'll have 2 extra life jackets and paddles, so 2 other people can paddle on my tandem inflatable kayak.

    October 20, 2011

  • Andrea Brown (.

Yeah, I kind of want to go Friday as well. Seems a shame to do all the work of setting up car camping just for one night. Especially when we have such a great group of people going! So is there room for all of us Friday night-ers at Bill's spot? Bill?

    October 20, 2011

  • Susanna

I will know more as the date approaches, but I plan on heading out Friday from work (around 3:30 or 4-ish)...I am quite adept at making camp in the dark. Potluck sounds great...Will and I are in cahoots for chili and homemade soy milk for Saturday evening. Kayaking sounds like fun, that would be a first for me. Matt, are there restrictions on firewood (bring your own, or collect on site -- although given the climate I would imagine bring your own -- used to desert and dry climate camping)?

    October 20, 2011

  • Matthew H.

Maria - The kayaks sound like a great idea. Not sure of others and their ideas of camping also on Friday. I won't be able to, but I will be enjoying all that I can for Saturday and Sunday.

I'll be going on Friday, leaving around 12 noon towing the trailer, so they'll be extra tent spaces in my spot. I'll bring the hot dogs, beans, and air freshener. Kayaking on the lake sounds great!

    October 20, 2011

  • Maria

    Also, I have two questions:
    1) would anyone else be interested on kayaking on Sutton Lake? I have flatwater kayak and an inflatable tandem kayak that I can bring if others would like to join me on the water?
    2) For those of us that are interested in 2 nights of camping, could a subset of us camp out on Friday night as well?

    October 20, 2011

  • Maria

This will be my first outing with this group and am looking forward to meeting everyone. To answer some of the questions:
-I have all kinds of car camping gear, and will be bringing a 2 person tent for myself and my dog. I will also bring cooking gear including pans, utensils, plates, etc for 4.
-I'm happy to contribute to the potluck dinner and breakfast. For dinner, I can bring several baguettes of bread & cheese. For breakfast: turkey sausage links.

I can bring a few games for the trip (cards, scrabble, etc). I'll also bring my kite for the beach.

    October 20, 2011

  • Matthew H.

By the way, who's interested in the potluck dinner for Saturday night's dinner? What do you plan on cooking and providing? I can make a large bowl of potato soup, and possible also one more. I will also pick up some dinner rolls to go with it. Thanks everyone that has responded and joined in on the interactions.

    October 18, 2011

  • Matthew H.

I won't be able to do two nights, just Saturday. By the time I got over to the coast Friday evening it would be dark and too late to try and set up everything. Plus I will be waiting for others to ride with me on Saturday morning. I'll see everyone on Saturday morning.

    October 17, 2011

  • Matthew H.

I just got off the phone with the management for the campground. They have moved the year round camping to loop B for this year. He said there is about 32 spots in that loop, and if it fills up, they simply will open up the other loops to more campers. Check in is at 2:00PM, and checkout is at 1:00PM. Now that I have the correct time for check in, we can either leave Eugene a little later, or just explore the beach some before getting our camp sites.

    October 12, 2011

  • Matthew H.

Andrea - I like the idea of two nights. As the date gets closer, I will see what I can do. If it looks like I can, I could go over Friday evening and set up a spot and hope the ones around it stay vacant. I would then just need someone to assure everyone meets in the morning and gets over to Florence safely and about the same time if possible.

    October 12, 2011

  • Matthew H.

Susanna - There should be a fire pit at all campsites. We will be in campsite loop A. It is the one available year round. The campground is good size and we should be able to get a few spots close to each other. The only drawback is that they discontinue the reservations for spots in mid September. So it all first come, first serve for spots. To save money, we should try to get as much gear and people into each vehicle. They charge $5 for a second car at each spot.

    October 12, 2011

  • Susanna

I am for two nights...if we drove up Friday evening after work...just a thought... {:P

    October 11, 2011

  • Andrea Brown (.

It's a shame we can't make it two nights instead of just one.
