Hiking - Spencer Butte

Spencer Butte is a dominate landmark on the southern border of Eugene.  The butte, as it is referred to as by local hikers, stands at 2055' with a panoramic view from its summit.  The butte has a great hiking trail that winds along through the tall Douglas firs that climbs to the top.  At just 2.3 miles round trip with 800' of elevation gain, the hike is suitable for all ages.

We will meet together at the stairs and hike up the trail together.  Be sure to bring some water and good hiking shoes or boots that can get muddy.  The trail has taken on a lot of water lately due to recent rainfall.  We will take some time at the top to sit and enjoy the views, relax, talk some, take pictures, before we head back down.  Possibly going to a nearby restaurant for a late lunch afterwards.

Yes it was and I so appreciated that although I felt bad that I held him up. But that was sweet of him.

An enjoyable hike on a cold and crisp afternoon. It was great to see so many new people join us for the hike. I had fun meeting new people, seeing some frost and snow on the butte and having lunch with friends together afterwards. I hope to set up something like this each month.

For those of you that haven't been to Spencer Butte before, the parking lot is not the one marked "Ridgeline Trail". We have had a few people go to the wrong spot for other groups and hikes before. The park will be clearly marked with a "Spencer Butte Park" green sign, and the parking lot will be paved and quite large. Look for a large group of people near the steps.

About how long will the hike take you think?

I can't honestly say. It depends greatly on the pace of the group, and I haven't hiked with everyone. It usually takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. So an hour of hiking, plus time to enjoy the view at the top. Which could very well be covered in snow this weekend.

Anyone going from the Salem area I could carpool with?

Just wanted to point out that this is only a little over a two mile hike, round trip. I'll leave it up to you on whether or not you want to travel that far for this hike. I will be adding events further north throughout the year, and especially this summer. Hope to see you on the trials one way or another.

I may be going down from Corvalis, but aim to spend some time in Eugene afterwards so it may not work out

As traditional for Sunday afternoon hikes with this group, we usually grab brunch afterwards. Any suggestions of places people would like to eat at after the hike? There are a few restaurants along Willamette that I would enjoy.
