Fearless Writing - A Willamette Writers Meeting

On Tuesday, April 1st, at the Old Church in downtown Portland, the Willamette Writers welcomes Northwest author Bill Kenower, who will share with the membership his insights on overcoming any writer’s worst enemy:  fear.

According to Bill, if you love to write and have a story you want to tell, the only thing that can stand between you and the success you’re seeking isn’t craft, or a good agent, or enough Facebook friends and Twitter followers, but fear.  Fear that you aren’t good enough, or fear the market is too crowded, or fear no one wants to hear from you.

Bill is the author of Write Within Yourself: An Author’s Companion, (Booktrope Editions, 2013), a collection of essays and stories to remind writers and all creative people why we must make the things we love to make.  Bill is also the Editor-in-Chief of Author magazine, an online magazine for writers and dedicated readers.  He writes a popular daily blog for the magazine about the intersection of writing and our daily lives, and has interviewed hundreds of writers of every genre, from Yann Martel, to Amy Tan, to William Gibson.  He also hosts the popular online radio program Author2Author, where every week he and a guest discuss the books we write and the lives we lead.  To learn more about Bill Kenower, go to

Deeply believing that I learn from my mistakes and grow the most from constructive criticism, I tend to approach the sharing of my writing not just fearlessly but eagerly. As a result, I wasn't sure I'd get a lot out of Kenower's talk, but, lo and behold, I'm happy to report that I came away with some very useful points to ponder and apply. Another good meeting.

Bill Kenower energized the room and his listeners. His energy is contagious, and the takeaways from his talk motivating. My husband, a designer and artist, accompanied me and was eager to share with Kenower how much he too had gained from being present. Thanks for a great evening!

Hope to meet some great writers and hoping to get set up with some classes and group to get all my work ready for publication. I would like to network some group over in the Happy Valley and Clackamas Co. Area. Thank you Mike (Scamp Drakefin)

I have just relocated to Oregon from SoCal where I worked in the film industry most of my adult life. I am currently working on multiple film&tv shows.

I travel from Aloha/Beaverton area to downtown for the first Tuesday meeting every month.

Is there anyone in this westside area, including Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Aloha, Beaverton who would like to share a ride into town on these first Tuesdays?

If so, email me at: [masked], and we can make arrangements to meet for next month's meeting.

    See you there,

    Shari ;)

I attended last night's meeting and came away with several ideas to ponder as I work to develop my novel's plot and characters and in other ways "grow" my writing skills. Once again, I look forward to the next meeting. I'm finding the meetings not only help me hone the craft of writing and learn about publishing today, but also are great for networking and meeting kindred spirits. Such a pleasure!
