Doeskin Ranch Field Trip - Balcones NWR

We will walk the trails of this hill country location within the confines of the Balcones Canyonlands NWR. We should see plenty of sparrows as the grasslands provide them with great habitat. Plan on meeting at Doeskin at 7:30 AM, directions can be found at http://www.theonlinezoo.com/centraltexasbirding/doeskin_ranch.html .

Please dress for the weather and the terrain. Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. Bring snacks, water, sunscreen, binoculars, etc.. We will probably be done by around 11:30.

Wish we could have made a video of our walk today. Hearing the evolution of the Doeskin Ranch to what it is today was so interesting. Thanks, Chuck Sexton. Thanks to Ray and Ginny for being our leaders.

A special Thank You to Chuck Sexton for enlivening what otherwise would have been a rather slow morning of birding. We enjoyed hearing about the history of the restoration efforts at Doeskin and your efforts at making it happen. Thanks again Chuck!!!

A special thank you to the Steelman team and Chuck Sexton. The restoration history and explanation of the various environmental conditions of the Doeskin area was incredible. Always a pleasure to be with the Steelman team. Welcome back!!

Oops, well, it's 8 a.m. now. I think the next time, I will just show up and hope there's room for me!! I seem to always get a notification that there's an opening when it's too late...

If this is a duplicate reply, sorry. Let's meet at the Subway parking lot at 6:50. I will have two others riding and will be in a Nissan Altima (gray). Look forward to meeting you.

OK, that is Liberty Hill. What time?

    Hi Ellen,
The Subway is located at 13750 West SH29, just west of the juncture of SH29 and RR1869. Thought that would be an easy place to find a safe place to park.

I live west of Georgetown, near the lake. I'd be interested in car pooling. Can you get to this part by FM 1869 at Hwy 29 in Liberty Hill?

Ellen, I will be glad to car pool with you. We can meet at the Subway on 29. I'll probably have 2 others coming too. Pam Goolsby

Yes, thank you. I would like to join your car pool. I can't picture a Subway on 29???

      January 23, 2014

  • Karen M.

Yes, you can. You would go south on 1869 toward Balcones, past the Shin Oaks parking area, to Hwy. 1174. Turn left on 1174 and watch on your left for Doeskin Ranch, which is well-marked. Perhaps another participate reading this can help you out?
