North Wrightsville Beach (map)
For this event, we will be walking on the beach with trainer Maleia Tumolo of Urban Fitness. The walk will be on the beach itself and it will be structured to give us a moderate workout. Here are some of the benefits of beach walking:
1)Aside from the beautiful view of the ocean, walking in sand requires a greater effort than walking on a hard surface. This means you will burn more calories than walking on a hard, flat surface 20 to 50 percent more calories than you would walking at the same pace on a hard surface.
2)Your muscles and tendons will work harder as your foot moves around and accommodates to the constantly changing terrain.
3)Walking at a slower pace requires more effort than walking fast or even jogging. Walking in sand requires 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy than walking on hard surfaces. Jogging in sand uses 1.6 times more energy than jogging on hard surfaces.
4)The advantage of running or walking on the beach is that the sandy surface has some give, making the exercise less jarring on your joints.
You can do this bare foot or bring a good pair of shoes. Afterward we will probably go jump in the water for a bit, so bring a bathing suit as well.
