Sandbar Run from Songo Locks

We will launch from just below the historic Songo Locks in Naples, ME and paddle down the Songo River to the sandbar at the entrance to Sebago Lake. We will stop on the sandbar and swim, play and/or picnic before returning back up the Songo River to the locks. Remember to bring a light lunch or snack on this trip! There is ample parking and a primitive toilet facility at the launch site. Take US Rt 302 north to the intersection of State Park Road in Casco. Follow State Park Rd past the entrance to the state park, cross a green bridge and take a left into the parking area for the locks. Do not cross the single-lane "swing" bridge. People who need a rental for this paddle need to contact Sebago Trails Paddling at[masked] to confirm a reservation.

I don't have a paddle meetup scheduled for this weekend. We have a big group going out through the Portland Water district and another adult ed class. That fills up my weekend. If others want to get together for a paddle, anyone else can schedule a meetup. Otherwise, I'll put up 2 more metups for the next two weekends - stay tuned. It should be some very good foliage paddling!

its very for doable on a moon light night as i have done quite a few times out and back after dark. Very surreal and peaceful. Sorry I could not go last Saturday as LL Bean is starting to ramp up for Christmas and got detained at work until later than planned. The Songo is very easy this time of year because of low water and also low boat traffic. Depending on the weather might be able to get out in the next moon phase if it is a clear night.

      Isn't that about now?

      1 · September 10

    • Calvin

Yes it is about now but it also gets cooler after the sun goes down which changes the way you paddle as well

Thought this was an excellent run, went at our own speed, had a nice little stop on the Sandbar, got to meet and greet with others. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks Bill, Donna Lovely

Lovely paddle yesterday on a perfect day!

Bill, do you think the paddle back from the sandbar is do-able for novices as a night paddle? We've got night headlights & flashlights & little boat lights. I could've stayed out on that sandbar until sunset... or even later. Might do it before the season is out, if the paddle back is not considered unwise.

    • Bill A.

As long as the current is not too strong. The way it was yesterday, a novice would do fine. Sounds like fun!

Unfortunately, I won't be making this after all (aggravated a still-healing broken rib & surrounding intercostals yesterday and it's still wonky; wisdom needs to prevail over desire here). :( Have a great time on this beautiful day &, daggittall, I WILL join you folks at some point!

It's been a long time since I've been in this particular area, on the water. I'm looking forward to it, but it's going to be a tight squeeze for me to be there by 2:00.

    • Bill A.

If you're running a bit behind call us at[masked] and we can wait a bit. By leaving as early as 2pm we're not rushing to get back by dark.
