First Road Rave of the Season!

This will be a treat after this seemingly endless Winter. Dust off your skates and join us for the first Friday Night Skate of the 2014 season!

Roadraves are street skates organized by National Skate Patrol. They take place every 1st and 3rd Friday during Summer.

Route: 10 to 12 Miles through the city. Every skate has a different theme that will be announced shortly prior to the event.

What to bring:

A helmet (Skate Patrol absolutely requires them). Wrist guards and other pads are also recommended.

Water (there will be none on the route).

Blinky lights if you have them.

 Required skill level:

Know how to brake

Comfortable skating in traffic (we skate on the streets)

Able to step over curbs, railroad tracks, etc.

Comfortable on hills

What else:

This event is organized by Skate Patrol and not by this meetup group. We will stay together as a group and don't run red lights etc.

You skate at your own risk. Skaters will have to sign a Waiver to attend.

Don't worry if you are not a fast skater. Speed will be determined by the slowest.

We typically end at a bar close to the starting location. Details to follow.

Check the Chicago NSP site for last minute updates and more information.  Raves are usually canceled by 3pm day of if bad weather is expected.

That was a lot of fun. We even skated through my neighborhood! It was good to meet new people and see the city. I hope to see everyone at the next slalom session or roadrave.

Things to do: put brake back on right foot. Practice on the one hill in Berwyn. Over and over.

You did great! Don't beat yourself up. Should've seen me on my first road rave.

You did fine Emily. Keep working on your braking. Remember to push your braking foot as far in front of your left foot as much as possible. This will require that you bend or "sit" on your left leg in order to get your right foot out in front. If you feel unstable at first, extend your arms out in front of you. This will act as a counter weight and help re-establish your balance. If you come to one of the Sunday Meetups, I will be happy to work with you on this.

I've been on/off skates with this group since 2008 due to injuries, etc. The group is awesome, don't be intimated they really do vary the pace for all skate and cardio levels.

Unfortunately I'm not good enough yet to do this! I hope I can try soon, though...

I'm nervous about it. It's my first one. I think the worst part will be pot holes. We shall see. Hope to see you soon!

Don't be nervous. This first skate is shorter (10 Miles). We wait for slow skaters. I was super nervous the first time I went out, 7 or so years ago, but everyone was so nice and supportive. Hope to see you!

Skated the route Tuesday night. Roads are pretty good. Only a few potholes. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. We don’t like potholes either. I am more worried about the weather, not potholes.

Hi. New to group but not to skating. Very excited to be here. Anyway, I need to find a skate shop in the Chicago area. Looking to get pads, wheel cleaner, maybe a new set if out door wheels. Anybody know a place they trust? Thanks.

I finally gave up and ordered online. After calling every place in the Chicago area. So sad. Inline skate warehouse is pretty awesome though. (I'm stubborn, thanks for putting up with me everybody!)

Sadly what you just went through is kind of a rite of passage for avid skaters in Chi nowadays. And so I say, "Welcome to the club!"

Tom is right . I was there last week (Halsted) and they have wheels, bearings and brakes. I also think they only sell K-2 skates.

Skaters: I sponsor a team for Hustle up the Hancock. A couple of people had to back out at the last minute. If you want to give it a go, please let me know and I will add you to the team.

We sometimes have longboarders too which works fine if you can keep up.

You can use in-line skates and traditional roller skates either way. At times it is a challenge even for experienced skaters but loads of fun. Looks like we are going to have a great turnout. Excellent!!!

  • Jason L.

    is this roller skates only

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
