George Yen, DTM, Toastmasters International First Vice-President 
and International President-Elect

Toastmasters: Where Leaders Are Made (or Remade)

Distinguished Toastmaster George Yen of Taipei, Taiwan, is the new President-Elect of Toastmasters International. Yen assumed the one-year term during the organization’s 81th annual International Convention, held Aug. 15–18 in Orlando, Florida, USA. “Through Toastmasters, I gained confidence and self-awareness,” Yen says. “The program’s core values of evaluation and service leadership changed the way I relate to others—from my employees to my children. I am honored to serve in this capacity and look forward to the opportunity to give back to an organization that helped me rebuild my life to who I am today.”

A dedicated Toastmaster for 22 years, Yen is a member of two Toastmasters clubs in Taipei: World Mosaic Toastmasters and the Taiwan Bi-Lingual club.Yen is Chairman of the Board of Great Sequoia Corporation, an international management and trading company based in Taiwan. In addition, he serves as the chief executive officer of four international joint ventures with Japanese, Canadian and American corporations in the fields of machinery and industrial products. Yen speaks four languages and holds a master’s degree in international relations from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Richard Riordan
Richard Riordan, Former Mayor of the City of Los Angeles

Richard Joseph "Dick" Riordan served from 1993 to 2001 as the 39th Mayor of Los Angeles, California. Riordan also served as the California Secretary for Education from 2003–2005. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. He also served the greater Los Angeles community as an attorney, a businessman and a city official, focusing on community-based leadership.

He launched The Riordan Foundation in 1981 with the goal of helping people acquire the skills necessary to compete successfully in society. The foundation works to teach children how to read and write at an early age and to nurture leadership skills in young adults. To date, the Riordan Foundation has encouraged computer-based, early childhood literacy programs and youth development and leadership programs with over 2,300 graduates. Through its "Rx for Reading" programs, The Riordan Foundation has distributed over 23,400 computers to a number of schools and provided books purchased for elementary classroom libraries. As mayor, Riordan tackled the problem of governing the sprawling city by spearheading the creation of neighborhood-based councils, to provide community organizations a way to participate in governance, and paid special attention to improving the state of the Los Angeles Unified School District

Mayor Riordan will be the recipient of District One's Communications and Leadership Award.

What do you have in common with a Distinguished Club President, a past Area Governor of the Year, and the President-Elect of Toastmasters International?  You all started in exactly the same place -- as a brand-new Toastmaster!  In our fun-filled breakfast session, "Morning with Laura," you'll get a chance to watch our own Past District Governor Laura Jarnat interview these exceptional individuals (and more!) as they share their adventures in moving from club member to Toastmaster leader.

The host of our breakfast, Laura Jarnat, is a professional speaker and trainer who found her voice through Toastmasters. Since setting out on her career over 18 years ago, she has educated and entertained over 1,200 audiences all over the English-speaking world, including in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Okinawa, and Singapore. Laura is a Past District One Governor, a Distinguished Toastmaster, a former Toastmaster of the Year, and recipient of the Roy D. Graham Lifetime Achievement Award. And she really, really loves Toastmasters!

Influence is the ability to shape the way people think, feel, and, ultimately, act. In this workshop, you'll learn how to influence people, whether or not you have the authority to tell them what to do, by making use of the four elements of an effective speech: 1) you as a person, 2) the event itself, 3) your message, and 4) audience participation. With over 35 years of professional speaking experience, Witt is a speechwriter and executive speech coach.

Many competent speakers want to turn their passion of public speaking into a profession. DiMino, better known as the Sicilian Mentor, has influenced executives, entrepreneurs and celebrities to use his template to turn their number one fear (public speaking) into their number one asset. Evaluation and International Speech Contests

Listen and learn as the best Evaluation Speakers from the six Divisions in District One analyze the model speaker, share insightful recommendations designed to improve the presentation's effectiveness and appeal, while encouraging the model speaker to continue their Toastmasters journey. Watch them compete for the title of District One Evaluation Champion.

And, get ready to experience the top six District One Toastmasters vying for the title of District One International Speech Champion. Each contestant will share his or her Division contest-winning 5-7 minute inspirational and motivational speech, seeking the opportunity to represent District One while competing against the other 85 District champions for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking at the Toastmasters International Convention to be held in Concinnati, Ohio from August 21 to 24, 2013.
