Discussion on John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany"

Mid-June
John Irving is one of American bestselling authors and also an Academy Award winning screenwriter. In 1989, his seventh and one of his most famous works was published. A Prayer for Owen Meany is an inspirational modern classic novel with apparent religious and spiritual theme. This book has been adapted in film, television, and theatre presentations.

The novel tells about the lives of two of Irving’s most memorable characters. They are Owen Meany and Johnny Wheelwright. Owen is a very extraordinary boy with remarkable character who believes that he is God’s instrument and that God has touched his life. Johnny is the best friend of and has his life greatly affected greatly by Owen.

In the summer of 1953, those two best friends play together in a baseball league. During one of the games, a fatal incident happens that changes the life of those two boys for good. Owen hits a foul ball that kills Johnny’s mother. After that foul ball, what happens to Owen Meanny is both amazing and terrifying.

We had a great group of 11 people last night! A big welcome to the new members who attended!
I'll shortly post details on the book for July.
We also had 2 no shows. If you rsvp, please be courteous & rescind your rsvp if you can't make it, especially now that we have a cap on attendance. If you don't show 3 times, you are banned from the group.

Sorry I won't be able to make it tonight. I was really looking forward to the discussion tonight. Injured my back and am home on bed rest and pain killers. Hope to make it next month. Keep me posted on what book we will be reading.
