Winnipeg Creation Museum Trip

The Winnipeg Skeptics are organizing a trip to Winnipeg's very own Creation Museum! This second meetup will involve actually going to the museum, talking with the people who run it, followed by a discussion period. The monthly HAM meeting takes place later that evening, with our own Gem Newman presenting! A one hour guided tour has been booked for Saturday November 13th at 12PM, which will be followed by a question and answer time according to the woman I spoke with. There is no cost associated with this, and I booked it under the name Winnipeg Skeptics with no trouble. She did say that the tours are generally limited to around 20 people - I imagine they don't have a huge amount of space. Suggestions for a place to sit down with a coffee for a discussion afterwards welcome!

To be honest ... my brain is still processing some of the shocking things I heard and saw. Plants are not alive? An oncologist creationist? Wow.

For lack of a better place to post this, here is the video that some of you may have heard me mention at the Pony on Saturday...

We were glad to have you Mike! I don't think anyone came across as angry, the civility shown by all was great to see. Anlina - Hopefully we can get the audio from the Q&A up for everyone to hear :) I've got a few pictures up on facebook if anyone is interested as well.

I'm very impressed with how everyone handled themselves, on both sides. It was loads of fun to take this stuff head on.

Illuminating. Highlights: Feakes' statement that the first 11 chapters of Genesis read as historical record (!), and his frank admissions that Jesus and the bible are the "source" for his research.

Very "enlightening" trip. The devotees running the museum certainly come across as sincere in their beliefs.

Don't worry about it at all, Mike! I can't speak for everyone, but I didn't think that you seemed angry. Welcome to the group!

I enjoyed myself quite a bit! It was wonderful to hear all of the debate (especially because everyone adhered to civility) and it was definitely a unique experience and a wonderful first introduction to the Winnipeg Skeptics.

Thanks for organizing this Ashlyn. I really enjoyed being a part of it. It was really nice to meet you all and I hope to learn some of your names next time. I was the guy with the blue hair BTW. Also I'm told that I might have seemed angry (shaking like a leaf). Being my first time with your group I hope I haven't misrepresented you. I was just really really nervous.

It was excellent to hear "the other side" from true Bible literalists. I was pleasantly surprised by their civility and thoroughly enjoyed discussing the science of evolution with them.

Lots of really interesting stuff. Fodder for many a blog post!

Thanks for having us today. It was really interesting and I'm sorry that we had to leave before the Q&A period - both my partner & I weren't feeling well today and I couldn't stand on my feet any longer. I look forward to future meetups. Thanks also to John and the rest of the people at the Creation Museum for presenting & having us today.

Dibs! I'm excited to be able to go to this!

My pleasure! Laura sends her apologies—it turns out that she has to work 'til one, so is unable to take the last spot for the tour. It remains up-for-grabs! She'd be happy to come out for lunch/coffee afterward for discussion, though.

Oh, in addition, it would be my preference if people could avoid wearing tshirts etc that would be taken as super offensive. Let's at least try to start out with a productive and interesting dialogue rather than having the proprietor feel attacked and mocked. I think we'll all get more out of it that way. If anyone has a different opinion, I'm of course open to hearing it.

Hey guys, sorry that I've been a bit absent this week, a bout of the flu has given me a smackdown. Thanks for posting those notes Gem! Re: comments posted on the prep board Tim - I think questions like that would be great for during the tour! I'd love to hear his position on that. Robert - As for tone and such, I'd prefer it if nobody went out of their way to be a jerk for the sake of it. Any questions about their beliefs or evidences are of course fair game.

I've posted (an expanded version) of the notes that I took at the prep. meeting here: http://startleddisbelief.com/20...

Note that when we got deep into discussion, I frequently forgot to write things down. Sorry!

I called the museum and we decided that the best thing would be for the Atheist Students Association to do a separate tour earlier in the day at 10:30am. Therefore, I'm no longer attending with the Skeptics but I'm still attending. That means one more slot is opened up for people to go at noon and if anyone can't do noon but can do 10:30, feel free to join the ASA on our tour.

    I understand. Happy birthday!

I'd like to have some more Game Nights for the group sometime soon, too! We now have the space for it, but things have been so busy with SkeptiCamp and work and prep for my HAM presentation (and playing Fallout: New Vegas, to be honest) that I haven't had time to organise anything.

@gem Sweet, thanks. I really wanted to go, but Nov 12 is my birthday, so I'm having an epic day of board gamery on the 13th. Hell, I think I'd rather go to the museum but that might annoy the 10-15 people who're coming to play games.

    November 1, 2010

  • Gem N.

Sorry, Tim! I doubt that they'll allow us to tape-record (wow, that's an outdated phrase) any of the presentation, but if we're allowed we'll take pictures. I'm sure that there will be a blog post or two in it as well! In any event, we'll be sure to fill you in.

Sorry for the confusion guys! I tried to make it as clear as possible, but rescheduling always gets messy. I'm sorry you guys won't be able to make it!

Gem, I don't appear to have much control over the waitlist, I believe it works like a normal RSVP, you sign up and then the first people to sign up on the waitlist get the first spots available if people cancel.

Bah. In that case, I'm out. So is Dustin, probably. Feel free to pop someone off the waitlist then

    November 1, 2010

  • Gem N.

Ashlyn, would you mind added Laura to said waiting list as well? She neglected to RSVP, but was hoping to make it if there was space.

    November 1, 2010

  • Gem N.

You did get an email about rescheduling the trip: unfortunately (for you, it seems) it was rescheduled TO the thirteenth (from the twentieth) due to a scheduling conflict. I'm sorry for all of the confusion, everyone!

So I could've sworn that I got an email about rescheduling the museum trip. Which I really hope we did, because I'm otherwise busy on the 13th. In any case, if it is still on the date listed above (13 Nov[masked]:00) then I can't come, so nathan can feel free to take my spot. If it has been moved, though, I will come, so in that case sorry man.

  • Ashlyn N.

For sure, I've actually heard that twenty people aren't even going to fit in the room itself, so I wouldn't feel comfortable stretching the attendance at all. I'll set up a waiting list so you can add yourself to it :)

Hi! I signed up for the prep but neglected to do so for the visit itself. I understand that they're pretty strict on their numbers, but if a position opens up, would it be possible to let me know? Regardless, I'll be attending the prep.

A tour has been booked! I figured I would get that out of the way first since if they wouldn't let us come there would be little point in continuing to plan. Hope to see you all there!

I'm so excited! I've been wanting to go to this museum for years.

For supper, I would recommend Falafel Place. It's right nearby, the prices are reasonable, and they have a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options.
