Door County / Washington Island Adventure Weekend

  • Best Western Maritime Inn

Note: This is a 3-day weekend ride, starting Friday, July 16 and returning Sunday, July 18. Enjoy an extended weekend outing on this self-supported bicycle tour in
Door County, Wisconsin, riding along the shores of Lake Michigan! The ride is based out of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where we will start Friday morning and return to Sunday afternoon.
The routes for both Friday and Sunday are 60 miles on quiet country roads with rest stops planned at the quaint towns where you can refresh yourself with the unique treats that Door County has to offer. There will be time for sightseeing and "doing the tourist thing" for those who wish to do so, however the routes are designed to avoid the highly congested tourist areas. Friday's ride goes to the Northern tip of Door County, where we will take a
ferry boat to
Washington Island. We will spend both Friday night and Saturday night on Washington Island. On Saturday, we will have a very casual tour around the perimeter of Washington Island, stopping at many places along the way and including
another ferry boat ride to
Rock Island State Park, which we will tour on foot. We'll have group dinners both Friday and Saturday. You may also join us for a
concert at the island's Performing Arts Center Saturday evening on Washington Island. On Sunday, we will return to Sturgeon Bay via a different route than our outbound route. We can expect to arrive back in Sturgeon Bay by early afternoon on Sunday.
Door County and
Washington Island offer an interesting assortment of things to do and see, and have numerous shopping and dining opportunities.
Please note that this is a self-supported ride and that no luggage transport is provided. Each rider is responsible for transporting their own supplies for the weekend. Pack light and use a large saddle bag or panniers. Enjoy the ride at a more moderate pace and experience a great sense of independence!
Sturgeon Bay Accommodations There are many motels in Sturgeon Bay, however the ride will start and end at the motel listed below. It is highly recommended that reservations be made ASAP for this motel for Thursday, July 15.

If you will not be staying Thursday night at this motel, plan to arrive Friday morning between 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM. We will push-off promptly at 8:00 AM.
Washington Island Accommodations There are many motels, cottages, B&B's and even a campground available on Washington Island. However, most of these fill up several months in advance or require a 1-week minimum stay, so it is strongly recommended to make your reservation ASAP for Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17 for your Washington Island lodging. Suggested places to stay include:
If you wish to stay elsewhere on Washington Island, or if rooms are no longer available at these choices, you may check online for a list of lodging options. Two online sources are
the Washington Island website and
the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce website.
*** RESERVE YOUR WASHINGTON ISLAND MOTEL ROOM NOW! This is Fly-In weekend on Washington Island and there is also a large wedding planned for this weekend, so the motels will fill-up months in advance. * * *

Had a great time and we had a great group of riders! Washington Island was a blast. It was fun to experience the fly-in and see all the planes.

If you are considering this ride, but are not yet sure, I would suggest booking your motel room NOW regardless of your final decision. You can always cancel your room a week or two before the ride should you later decide not to go. The motel rooms on Washington Island get sold out several months in advance.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
