Triple Chainring Weekend

  • Jun 27, 2008 · 1:00 PM
  • Mid-Trail Motel

Note: This is a 3-day weekend ride, offering three road rides, Friday, June 27 through Sunday, June 29. Come for just a day or all three! The weekend is based out of Wilton, WI, at the midpoint of the Elroy-Sparta trail. If you prefer a trail ride, choose Elroy-Sparta Trail Weekend, which is also based out of Wilton on the same weekend. Three unique and very challenging road rides are planned for the weekend. You'll want to bring a bicycle with low gearing, preferably one with a triple chainring, as each day's ride has several long, steep hills. All rides begin and end in the town of Wilton and include several rest stops along the way. After the rides on Friday and Saturday, we'll have group dinners with the trail riders. You may also wish to bring a trail bike with a headlight, as we've done trail rides at night in past years.
Friday: Amish Farmhouse Bakery (50 miles) Friday's ride features a stop at an Amish farmhouse bakery, where they will have a wide assortment of fresh, homemade goodies available, all at very reasonable prices.
Plan to arrive at the start location, the Mid-Trail motel, between 1:00 PM and 1:15 PM. We will push-off promptly at 1:30 PM.
Saturday: Over The Tunnels (70 miles) Saturday's ride takes us through Amish countryside and on the roads that go OVER all 3 of the tunnels of the Elroy-Sparta trail.
Plan to arrive at the start location, the Mid-Trail motel, between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM. We will push-off promptly at 8:00 AM.
Sunday: Ben Biken (50 miles) Sunday's ride includes a visit with Ben Biken, atop the World's Largest Bicycle, in the town of Sparta, WI, proclaimed to be the Bicycling Capital of America.
Plan to arrive at the start location, the Mid-Trail motel, between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM. We will push-off promptly at 8:00 AM.

Had a great time. Road riding doesn't get much better than this and it was great to share the rides with friends.

The area around Wilton is one of the best places in Wisconsin for road biking. Ron went to a lot of trouble to select great routes. Just a great couple of days in spite of some showers (and a little hail).

Ron, As always, you do such a great job organizing these biking events. While I've biked the Elroy-Sparta trail, I never realized how beautiful the surrounding area is -- what a joy to discover something new. I really began to love southwest Wisconsin after "America's Little Switzerland." Now, I discovered how beautiful another area is -- thanks to Ron. Ron -- if it wasn't for you all your detailed work and research on the routes, we wouldn't have these new and exciting areas to discover. You've really opened up this area of Wisconsin to us. Thanks for all your efforts! Mark

As of 6/15, all 4 of the rooms at the Mid-Trail Motel have been reserved by our group. There are still several B&B's in the area with rooms available, as well as the campground in Wilton and motels in the nearby towns of Sparta and Tomah.
