Sugar River & Badger State Trails Weekend

  • Aug 29, 2009 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note: This is a 2-day weekend ride, offering two guided trail rides, Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30. Come for just a day or the whole weekend! The weekend is based out of New Glarus, a unique and authentic Swiss community in southern Wisconsin. If you prefer a road ride, choose "America's Little Switzerland" Weekend, which is also based out of New Glarus on the same weekend.
New Glarus offers attractions for after our bike rides, with a quaint downtown area with
shopping and
dining options, the
Swiss Historical Village and Museum, the
New Glarus Brewery, which even has tours, a winery, and nearby cheese factories with tours. After the ride on Saturday, we'll have a group dinner with the road riders.
Note: A Wisconsin state trail pass is required to ride on these trails. There are many places in New Glarus where you may purchase either a daily or annual trail pass.
Saturday: Sugar River State Trail (Options for 12, 32 or 46 miles) The
Sugar River State Trail has a
crushed limestone surface and is suitable for hybrid bikes or road bikes with wider tires. The trail runs along the Sugar River and is very flat. The length of the entire trail is 23 miles (one way), which will take you over a replica covered bridge to Brodhead. The shorter routes take you on out-and-back trips to Monticello and Albany.
Plan to arrive at the start location, the north (side) parking lot of the Chalet Landhaus Inn, between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM. We will push-off promptly at 8:00 AM.
Sunday: Badger State Trail (Options for 20 or 48 miles) The
Badger State Trail also has a
crushed limestone surface, suitable for hybrid bikes or road bikes with wider tires. The trail is on a former rail grade and is very flat. We will go north on the trail, through the 1,200-foot-long Stewart Tunnel, and on to the town of Belleville (20 miles round trip). The longer route (48 miles round trip) will continue north on the trail to the Capital City Trail in Madison.
Plan to arrive at the start location, the north (side) parking lot of the Chalet Landhaus Inn, between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM. We will push-off promptly at 8:00 AM.
New Glarus Accommodations The
New Glarus website lists 2 motels, several B&B's and a primitive campground. The 2 motels are:

  • Chalet Landhaus Inn [masked] $99 per night. This is the suggested motel for the weekend, since the rides will begin from the parking lot of this motel.

  • Swiss Aire Motel [masked] $80 per night. All rooms are on the first floor and you may bring your bicycle into your room overnight.

The motels and B&B's fill up several months in advance, so it is strongly recommended that reservations be made ASAP for your lodging for the course of your stay.

It was a great ride on the Sugar River trail. The weather could've been warmer but it was pleasant enough to enjoy the ride. The trail was easy. Lauren was a great leader and very knowledgable.

The trails were great with beautiful scenery, and as usual, the ride was well organized. (Trail rides were 48 miles one day and 24 the next but provided options for others to join along the way, as they did...) Great group of fun and interesting people -- the usual for these rides.
(These rides are so good I come all the way from Chicago....)
