"Parental Rights and Responsibilities"

It’s a reasonable assumption that all of us have been “parented” for some portion of our lives. Many have “parented” others. If nothing else, all of us have observed “parenting” in action. But for so universal an experience, are there any “guidelines” for how it should be done? And, if so, how are these “guidelines” taught and enforced? To what extent do parents have the right to do with their child as they see fit? What “minimum standards” does society have a right to expect of a parent? For how long and to what extent should society hold parents responsible for the actions of their child?
