In Western societies, suicide has historically been condemned ... typically viewed as an offense toward God ... sometimes defined as a crime against society. It was typically assumed people committed suicide only as a consequence of a psychiatric disorder such as depression, schizophrenia, alcoholism, or drug abuse. In more recent years, it's been recognized that someone might understandably attempt suicide when faced with financial difficulties or declining health. We've begun to realize people can have very "rational" reasons for committing suicide. Some states have legalized physician assisted suicide. Some people are advocating for elimination of the "stigma" that often attaches to those who kill themselves.

Join us as we consider the "legitimate" reasons one might have for committing suicide and the ramifications to society at large if we "allow" (and, perhaps, "assist") those who wish to do so to end their lives "prematurely".
