Summer Apps Program: Build your first web application with Ruby on Sinatra

  • July 9, 2012 · 6:30 PM

Part 2 of a 4 part class series, those who took June's Ruby class will learn how to put their Ruby API on a Sinatra framework. If you did not take the Ruby class - a pre-built API will be provided, it is suggested that students have a rudimentary understanding of Ruby to take this course. This course is a great way to ease your way into learning a more robust framework like Rails.

Melissa's non-techie note: Think about Ruby as the muscles that do the work and Sinatra as the bones that cary out the work and help the muscles interact with the world.

From Wikipedia

Sinatra is a free and open source software web application library and domain-specific language written in Ruby. It is an alternative to other Ruby web application frameworks such asRuby on RailsMerbNitroCamping, and Rango. It is dependent on the Rack web server interface.

Designed and developed by Blake Mizerany, Sinatra is small and flexible. It does not follow the typical model–view–controller pattern used in other frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. Instead, Sinatra focuses on "quickly creating web-applications in Ruby with minimal effort."

Some notable companies and institutions that use Sinatra include AppleBBC, the British GovernmentLinkedInEngine YardHerokuGitHub, and Songbird. Heroku provides much of the financial support for Sinatra's development.

I picked up good tips here. The instructors were very helpful. It wasn't an easy task since everyone was a different levels. Overall, it was a good experience.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
