Java Study Group

Following up from our first "intro" to coding - we are starting our first study group!

I absolutely promise we are teaching Java for more reasons than because Ria and I love it (it doesn't hurt). Java is taught as the first language in over 50% of colleges, and recommended all over the place as where you start.

On top of that Ria is a professional teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School (ranked #4 Nationally and #1 for STEM out of all high schools in the country). If there is any very serious piece of advice I can give you - nothing is better than learning with an awesome teacher. Great computer science teachers are very hard to come by. To this day, I am extremely grateful for my first teacher - I never would have stuck with being a programming if it wasn't for her.

SO after that PSA about why you should learn Java specifically because we have Ria teaching it - what will we learn?

We are going to be following an online resource (to be picked very soon) so that if you can't make a meeting, you can stay up to date on your own. This will start from the very beginning (what is a text editor?) and take you all the way up to being very comfortable in Java. After this it will be so much easier to learn your second language (Python, Objective-C, JavaScript) anything really - and you can very easily move on to make Android Apps!

We are very excited to have you come out to this first study group! And if you have questions or comments - please use this discussion thread!

The only thing you need to bring is a laptop. If that is a problem for you (broken laptop, desktop, etc) shoot the organizers of this group a message and we'll figure something out!

Hey there--can I get the url of the udemy lesson you taught with? Would like to do on my own. Thanks!

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. I didn't teach with any udemy lesson. If you are asking about the two online courses we recommended, one of them was from udacity at it can be found at https://www.udacity.co.... If this isn't what you were looking for, let me know!

I work on a PC from my home office so I don't have a laptop. Is there one I can borrow for the event or I could just take notes? I mostly design for print so I don't have any Java experience at all this is new for me. Thanks:)

I just recently became aware of this awesome group. So, I missed the "intro" to coding...I have little to no experience...would I still benefit from attending?

Yes! This group is for beginners!

Have you picked a resource yet? I'm not sure I'll be able to make it this week, unfortunately, but I'm a pretty avid developer so I'm hoping I can just keep up and make it to one of the sessions soon.

Is it OK, if we missed your first "Intro to Coding"?

I work in Fairfax so it's a long trip to DC for an evening meeting. What do you think about a gotomeeting in addition to live attendance? I can offer a meeting ID

Hmmm that could be really cool and great for people far out in VA / MD - I would just be afraid of getting so many people on the call that you can't work together in person. We'll talk about it together and see what we can make work!
