Women's Javascript Study Group

Scheduled Presentation: JavaScript design patterns by Robin Keller

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

lecture with java classes and javascript together was kind of confusing for my level, but really appreciate your taking the time to teach, giving a lesson. also appreciate the book recommendation -- design patterns.

We try to vary presentations from beginner to more intermediate level and keep them short so the focus is on self directed study. (We don't always have a lecture scheduled every week by the way.)

I've found that repeated exposure to concepts from various materials helps me better understand and remember even if the first few times it was really over my head so don't worry too much if some lectures are above your current level.

By the way, if you are a beginner to programming the design pattern books they mentioned are going to be really difficult to get much out of. It's good to know about for when you are trying to progress your skills to more intermediate to advanced stages however.

There is a parking lot behind the building but we advise strongly against parking in this area at night. It's just not very safe.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
