Women's Javascript Study Group

  • Jul 3, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

I was just informed about a hackathon that may interest some of you. Details below.

HumanAPI Hackathon @ YetiZen on July 6-7th

HumanAPI is a startup helping developers turn health data into valuable consumer and healthcare applications. The event will bring together over 200 healthcare and quantified self hackers to build for 24 hours with various health and human data APIs, and showcase HumanAPI for the first time. More than 600 developers signed up in the first 48 hours of the hackathon announcement.

Use this code, "APIHACKERS" for 50% off your ticket!http://humanapisf.eventbrite.com/

Hey all, if the BART strike ends up keeping you from being able to come, please drop out and give someone on the waitlist a spot! I may not be able to come if the strike keeps going....
