Women's Javascript Study Group

  • Aug 28, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Presentation: "JavaScript Scope and Closures" by Tuhin Chakraborty of Hack Reactor
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - we go upstairs at 6:30pm sharp. We check the lobby once more at 6:45pm for latecomers but if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down from the 6th floor to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

Btw, just wanted to suggest... For those of you wanting to attend who don't yet own a laptop and are on a budget you might want to look into getting an old used notebook computer. I haven't investigated but I think it should be cheaper than a laptop plus it's plenty for getting started with JavaScript and/or HTML & CSS coding.

Just realized I actually meant to suggest "netbooK" computers instead as a cheap alternative to a full blown laptop. I did a quick search on Craig's List and saw some for sale well for under $200. Here's one I found for $120 for example: http://sfbay.craigsli...

When I participated in a Startup Weekend event back in 2009 all I had at the time was a little netbook that I used to design and write code for my team's project.

It's great to find a community of lady coders of all different levels who enjoy helping each other out

Tonight's presentation is on a more advanced topic so we will give beginners a chance to split off to a separate room if they wish before we begin.

I'm in the waiting list. how will I know I got a spot?

    August 28, 2013

    • Beth B.

Meetup should notify you when you go off the waitlist -- it might not be til last minute, though.

Is this event open to trans women? These events used to have a trans inclusive policy stated on them. It seems to have disappeared. Is that a sign of unawareness, or of deliberate exclusion? Sadly, inclusion can't be taken for granted by trans women. If you don't say, you're de facto being exclusive, since most of us won't risk humiliation at best and physical violence at worst just to attend a meetup.

Hi Annie, I've replied to you in the past about this -- everyone who identifies as female is welcome and encouraged to come, including all queer and trans folk.

Hi! I don't own a laptop so I will be needing one for tomorrow. Hope that's arrangable, thank you!

Hi Michelle, sorry I just saw your email requesting a laptop. Would you be ok sharing with your friend since we only have one extra?

      August 27, 2013

    • Beth B.

We have books you could look through -- I know it's not the same as actually coding, but it might be of interest.

Hey folks, Beth and Kristin especially just want to make sure that I can reserve the interview laptop this week. Thanks

+1 can I bring my sister?

    August 23, 2013

    • Kristin B.

Is she on the waiting list? I want to be careful about starting to make too many exceptions to people needing to be on the rsvp list since then we won't have an accurate count of the number of people coming which could lead to problems that would wear out our welcome at Zoosk. It's also not really fair to people who are still on the waiting list.

      Beth, what do you think?
