Algorithms Study Group

  • Sep 9, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • SOMA Place

We will be watching videos on algorithms from Coursera, white boarding, and discussing algorithms. Coursera is offering a new 6-week algorithms course from Stanford called "Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Part 1". A version of this course is taken by sophomore, junior, and senior-level computer science majors at Stanford as a required course. The class will cover fundamental principles of algorithm design: divide-and-conquer methods, graph algorithms, practical data structures (heaps, hash tables, search trees), randomized algorithms, and applications. Sign up to take the course online and download the videos:

https://www.coursera.org/course/algo

We'll be working on Graphs as part of week 3.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female. queer- and trans-friendly.

DIRECTIONS: It's the Sourcery Office, but it's not labeled. The conference room is on 210, so ring the bell on the 210 side (the door has graffiti art on it).

Work is so busy this week, and I'm trying to wrap things up before bday drinks on Friday. My new WWC algorithm group friends are welcome to come. Here's the info: Friday 9/13 @ Taverna Aventine
      582 Washington Street from 4-8 pm https://www.facebook.c...

That sounds lovely, I may very well join.

Is the Algorithms Study Group still at 212 Clara St? I was reading the previous comment from Na'ama Moran and I was a little confused.

Hi! I'm assuming that this Monday (8/26) will be the beginning of the cycle for this course. Would this be true? If so, I'd like to join in on 9/2, as I can't attend at the moment.

How far are you ladies into the course? Week 2, 3?

      September 5, 2013

    • Zoe M.

      Week 3.

Just a reminder, this algorithms course is currently on week 3. We are not starting from the beginning, so if you have not attended previous sessions, you may feel lost or discouraged. Having said that, people have also come in with just a small background and enjoyed it despite being a little lost. I leave it up to everyone's discretion.

Do you plan of repeating this study course in the near future?

      September 6, 2013

    • Zoe M.

Possibly, but no plans to right now.

  • Na'ama M.

Zoe, I am happy to host this event at our office in SOMA. If there are not too many people we can all fit into our conference room.

Also, we own the office in both 210 and 212, but the conference room is on 210, so ring the bell on the 210 side (the door has graffiti art on it). Hope thats not too confusing.

I'm expecting about a third of the attendees will show up, so I'd plan for 12, 15 on the top end.

What is your target language for this study course?

    September 2, 2013

    • Zoe M.

It's Pseudocode. We don't usually program in a particular program, but instead write out steps, work with the concepts of algorithms.

Is this event open to trans women? These events used to have a trans inclusive policy stated on them. It seems to have disappeared. Is that a sign of unawareness, or of deliberate exclusion? Sadly, inclusion can't be taken for granted by trans women. If you don't say, you're de facto being exclusive, since most of us won't risk humiliation at best and physical violence at worst just to attend a meetup.

Hi Annie, sorry for that -- and sorry for not responding earlier, I've been gone. Yes, please join us! The meeting is open to those who identify as female and I think I was thinking that was inclusive of trans, but it sounds like our wording is not up to par. Please let me know what wording would be best and I'll have a talk with the organizers to change it and make sure we're being explicitly inclusive. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
