Women's Javascript Study Group

  • January 15, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Presentation: Ruben Abergel will present his hackerhours.com project for code collaboration

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - we go upstairs at 6:30pm sharp. We check the lobby once more at 6:45pm for latecomers but if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down from the 6th floor to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

Great place to work on your own thing, and be able to ask that little question that can change your understanding or workflow and make a big difference.

    Thanks!

My bus is running way behind... I really don't want to miss this but I might not get there until 650.

Sorry, I didn't see this. I usually don't have time to check the Meetup board messages during the meeting time. 6:45 is the strict cutoff for late-comers as it's too disruptive to the group otherwise.

Still stuck in traffic! Is it possible for someone to take my spot if they want it?

Ran a few minutes behind and missed my train. Directions say I should still be there by 6:45. So I should be there when you kindly check for late comers.

I'm on the wait list. If I am there at 6:45 and there is room can I join, or do zoosk need a list beforehand

    January 15, 2014

Sorry, we a limited capacity. You need to be off the waitlist to come.

Hello! I don't have a proper laptop, but am interested into joining!

If one is available, I'd love to borrow it for the session!

    Thanks!

We usually have one loaner laptop available. I can reserve it for you. Just remind me to grab it for you on the night of the meetup when you arrive.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
