Women's Javascript Study Group

  • March 19, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - we go upstairs at 6:30pm sharp. We check the lobby once more at 6:45pm for latecomers but if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down from the 6th floor to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!). Afterwards, we have a short discussion or a presentation on a related topic when scheduled, then all hop on our laptops and work on JavaScript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools. Although the focus is on JavaScript, we also cover closely related topics such as HTML and CSS.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall. If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

This event is exclusively open to people who identify as female.

Does anyone know of an alternative to JavaScript or jquery when it comes to making limitless scroll? Perhaps using css, html, or components?

    • Clara

Yes, and also to load faster. I figured that maybe if I use less scripts outside of html and css, load time might be lighter. Just a theory though.

I think you would need to use JavaScript to update in real time although you don't need to use jQuery.

Is there a presentation or discussion scheduled this week?

    March 19, 2014

    • Kristin B.

Nothing is scheduled for tonight. If we have a talk scheduled I try to always update the Meetup description for that night and I also mention it in the email I send out to those who RSVP the day of the meetup.

    Hi,
I am new to this group. I am attending today's session. Can any one suggest me if I have to learn or brush up some concepts before attending this session?

You don't need to. Many who come are completely new to Javascript or even programming, but all levels are there and you can plug in where you feel most comfortable.

All levels are welcome. There's no need to prepare anything in advance.

When is the next meet up?

    March 19, 2014

    • Kristin B.

We meet every Wednesday night. Next week (March 26) there is an alternate event for Women in Wireless however so I will be canceling our regular meet up for that night.
