Hack night! In other words, bring a laptop, charger, and something you want to build or learn.
And COOKIE PARTY! It is the holidays, after all. Please feel free to bring a delicious batch to share with the group as we hack.
This event is ONLY open to people who identify as women. Emphatically queer and trans friendly.
6:00 Hang out, chat to neat ladies, eat pizza/cupcakes/soda/beer (thanks, Twilio!)
6:30 Start splitting up into smaller groups. Ask or offer help on your project, or ask for project ideas.
6:45 Work/chat/eat!
10:00 Go home and get your beauty rest.
Thanks to Twilio for the food, Serve for the registration, and Blazing Cloud for the space!
Logistics: The building has a few steps at the doorway. You can bring bikes into the space. We provide lots and lots of power strips, but bring your chargers.
You can come and work on whatever you like, including tutorials or sample projects. There are a few other Rails learners in the group that may be there so you can find study buddies.
No, it's definitely not Rails-only! While it's true that there is a non-trivial segment of people that are into Rails and learning Rails in the community, there is also vocal support for evangelizing the beauty of node.js (hi harthur!). I've also talked to people that do Java, Python/Djanjo/google app engine, php, perl, c, iOS... lots of variety! I am personally going to be staring at existing open frameworks for the Kinect and trying to learn C# even though I'm pretty much a beginner, haha.
Hi Anna, I'm new and learning too. Sounds like about the same level as you. So you are welcome to work with me and we can feel stupid together ;)
@Sara G.: hooray for feeling stupid in solidarity! I'll be the one with the kiwi accent. ;)
guys i`m also completely new! i`m glad that i`m not alone lol
Bummer, I have an important training. Def next time. ;-)
I'm thinking of messing around with Mediawiki and php and looking at Mediawiki extensions.... They are having a hackathon in January and I'd like to learn a bit before going to the hackathon! (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Hackathon_Jan...![]()
)
If I make it after the dentist's appt. I'd be happy to lend my help on brainstorming, ideating on someone else's project. Also down to spend some time learning more about PHP or rails with others. Awesome we're gonna be at Jen-Mei's company's office. It's a hectic week so if I don't see you, happy coding!
I'm going to try to get hosting for womenwhocode.com figured out, and welcome feedback from the group about what would be useful there.
Sasha: for me, the most useful thing on a wwcode website would be forums where we can all discuss various topics (learning x programming language, giving each other advice/support). :)
I haven't coded in 10 years, so will be looking for newbies too! This is my first step back in...love that you guys have a support group for this :) I also am hoping to chat with any passionate engineer who may be interested in joining a women empowerment-focused internet/mobile ecommerce start-up (if this is not the right forum to advertise that, by all means, tell me to shut up, but thought I would put it out there!!) Looking forward to tomorrow!
Aw wish I could make this- I'm moving to new york tomorrow!!! I'll really miss this group, I hope I can find something similar in NYC!!
Oh no! I'm sorry to see you go, Ana. Good luck in your travels and come back and visit us soon.
Don't have time to bake cookies tonight, so bought a bunch for tomorrow. Vegans won't go cookie-less!
I'm baking some traditional New Zealand ANZAC biscuits (don't listen to Australian - they are totally kiwi ;) ). I figure this will inspire me to get started on those tutorials tonight, LOL.
w00t! Excited to be attending my first Women Who Code event tonight!
Last minute emergency. I won't be able to attend. I hope someone can use my spot (Annie :-) - I will "unrsvp" now. Hope to meet everyone at the next one.
Unless somebody else is late, and coming past tech shop menlo park soon, so I can get a ride, I'm afraid it's too late for me. 8c(

Annie is going to do an Ignite talk on "How To Get A Real Job In A Virtual World"
Adria's going to do an Ignite talk on "How To Move To San Francisco".
Somebody at cookie night was looking for beta testers for a dating site. If they would, I'm hoping that person will contact me 8cD (annie66us (at) yahoo)

I am super new to rails - is that going to make things too challenging? I've worked through pragmatic programmers ruby, and have watched peepcode's rails vid (part 1 only at this stage), but I'm really interested in learning rails, so I just want to dive in.
