Women's Javascript Study Group

  • February 20, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Overview

We're a group of women who want to learn to Javascript together.  We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm.  Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format

Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!).  Then we have a short discussion or a presentation on a topic, then all hop on our laptops and work on Javascript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck.  Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools.

Venue

Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall.  If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

I met in the lobby and name tags were being passed around. We went upstairs and had dinner. Then we all gathered in the conference room and someone shared a javascript project they had completed. Next we did introductions, and then we all worked independently for a couple hours. It was a good atmosphere with chat at the beginning and focused studying or JS conversations in the middle and end.

Hey ladies, this will be my first time at one of these. I am really excited, but I was wondering, if it would be ok for me to bring my small, sweet, quiet dog with me to sit on the floor at my feet. I feel bad leaving him at home at night when I work all day.

Hi ladies! Many of you expressed interest in donating to my campaign, so I'm including the link to donate here:
    http://www.indiegogo.com/gallevent

There are only 10 DAYS LEFT to donate! Any little bit helps. If you can't donate at this time, but would still like to help, please share my campaign link with your friends!

    Thank you!

P.S. Women Who Drink will meet at Bluestem at 9:40 after the study group.

I just calculated the stats and found that:

49% of our total funds have been donated by men
39% of our total funds have been donated by women
12% of our total funds were donated anonymously

I'm hoping to get more girls to contribute to the campaign. We can get our numbers up!

      Thank you,
      Jess

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
