Women's Javascript Study Group

  • March 6, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Overview
We're a group of women who want to learn to JavaScript together. We welcome people of all levels, but beginners are especially encouraged. You move at your own pace in this group, so it doesn't matter if you are a fast or slow learner, or if you attend every week.

We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 - 9pm. Free (non-pizza) dinner included, with gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Please be punctual - if you will be later than 6:45pm, please skip the group. We have to come down to the lobby to get latecomers, so it's disruptive to dinner and coding to do so.

Format
Our meetings begin with yummy food catered by our host, Zoosk, and we eat with Zoosk employees (some of whom can answer JS questions!).  Then we have a short discussion or a presentation on a topic, then all hop on our laptops and work on Javascript tutorials and help each other when we get stuck. Most of us are using codecademy.com, but we welcome other tools.

(The only tools you need to start using JavaScript are a web browser and optionally a simple text editor or code editor.)

Venue
Thanks to Zoosk, our wonderful sponsor, for the food, space, and support.

Our entrance is to the right of the Blick Art Supply Store on Market Street, one block southwest of Powell Street BART and the Westfield Mall.  If you're afraid of the dark, no worries -- we can all walk to BART/Muni together afterwards. Just go on in (or knock if it's locked), and a friendly Zoosker (Beth or Kristin) will meet you in the lobby.

PS - If you want to come but don't have a laptop, just RSVP with a note and we'll try to find one for you.

I loved meeting so many great people. I will come again for sure. And the dinner was wonderful. I was just wondering if some people were willing to work on the same project or tutorial together. It just felt a little awkward sitting at a table and all of us working on different projects and tutorials. But it was totally worth going!

All you need is a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. A text editor can be helpful too for creating and saving web files but it's not necessary for using most online tutorials.

It's great! I am very excited to join in this group, but what do i need to prepare?

    March 6, 2013

    • Kristin B.

Hi! You don't need to prepare anything. We all study at our own pace and then just help each other when we get stuck. Most of us have been using the online JavaScript tutorials at http://www.codecademy...

Is this open to trans women? WWC events used to say they were inclusive. I'm wondering if they've changed to being segregated.

      Trans women are emphatically welcome!
