Indigenous Medicine and Shamanism Study Group
This Group explores themes of shamanism, magic, healing and ritual. In recent decades more and more people have written books exploring shamanism as a way of life, and so there are many resources to draw from. We no longer have to seek out elders who only pass on teachings through oral transmission. Although that path still has its advantages, we live in a special and unprecedented time where shamanic practices and esoteric teachings are openly taught and available to everyone, and widely discussed by the uninitiated. This is both a blessing and a sacred responsibility.
Shamanism as a worldview acknowledges the Spirit world as the foundation of everything. The root traditions all vary to some degree, but the underlying view is largely the same: what we often perceive as inanimate is actually full of Life and meaning. By looking at various perspectives on the subject, we have the opportunity to deepen our ancestral memory and reclaim from the past, as well as to choose today which practices we might best integrate into the modern experience. As we study together, we have the chance both to learn from each other's wisdom and the possibility of seeing a separate reality.
$15/group. Each month we read a different book to open the discussion. This month's book is The Shaman's Body by Arnold Mindell. Read as much as you can, then bring favorite passages, ideas or questions that surfaced while reading, and/or practices that you'd like to learn more about. You may pick up a copy on your own, or purchase one at Mind of Light. Although it is encouraged to participate through reading, you are also welcome to sit in on the group discussion without being current with the chosen book. People of all backgrounds are welcome.
