Magical Thinking

Indigenous Medicine and Shamanism Study Group

This Group explores themes of shamanism, magic, healing and ritual. In recent decades more and more people have written books exploring shamanism as a way of life, and so there are many resources to draw from. We no longer have to seek out elders who only pass on teachings through oral transmission. Although that path still has its advantages, we live in a special and unprecedented time where shamanic practices and esoteric teachings are openly taught and available to everyone, and widely discussed by the uninitiated. This is both a blessing and a sacred responsibility.

Shamanism as a worldview acknowledges the Spirit world as the foundation of everything. The root traditions all vary to some degree, but the underlying view is largely the same: what we often perceive as inanimate is actually full of Life and meaning. By looking at various perspectives on the subject, we have the opportunity to deepen our ancestral memory and reclaim from the past, as well as to choose today which practices we might best integrate into the modern experience. As we study together, we have the chance both to learn from each other's wisdom and the possibility of seeing a separate reality.

$15/group. Each month we read a different book to open the discussion. This month's book is The Shaman's Body by Arnold Mindell. Read as much as you can, then bring favorite passages, ideas or questions that surfaced while reading, and/or practices that you'd like to learn more about. You may pick up a copy on your own, or purchase one at Mind of Light. Although it is encouraged to participate through reading, you are also welcome to sit in on the group discussion without being current with the chosen book. People of all backgrounds are welcome.

Facilitated by Shinai A. Schindler, Meditation instructor and Intuitive medium. Shinai has studied shamanism since 1999, and facilitated healing ritual since 2002.

*We request that no perfumes or fragrant cosmetics be worn to facilitate clear practice, and in respect to asthmatic participants.

Free Parking is available in front of the Studio. Please be aware and use caution when entering and exiting 66th St N.

This morning, I shared energies with the ducks, birds, squirrels and my favorite - the turtles. There was an overabundance of turtles. One of the giant turtles walked out center front before me. With each step he took towards me out of the water, I walked toward him crouching down more and more until he was completely out of the water and we held spellbound face to face. What a magical moment. Moments later, one of the turtles that had previously been riding his back also would venture out to stand before me. She was learning a lesson of higher trust by witnessing the parent being actualized in it.

When I was undergoing a spiritual transformation into metaphysics years ago, I crossed paths with a Shaman who gave me a soul retrieval session. In this session, I encountered the turtle who remained with me throughout the session. Shaman advised me the turtle was my spirit animal or totem on this journey and that it was my teacher, friend, guide and that I was also playing this role for it. She said it would remain with me throughout this journey and I could call on it anytime.

I've had magical moments concerning physical turtles since then but the one today was bold and very magical. I never tire of the magic that life presents. Life itself is magical and we should never forget that. Have a wonderful evening tomorrow with the light circle.
