Caverns of Sonora Trip (Day trip or overnight camping)

We're planning a group excursion to the amazingly beautiful Caverns of Sonora!!  We did this last year, and had so much fun that we are planning a return trip.  Some of us will be camping overnight and enjoying a drum circle under the incredible West Texas stars, while others may wish to make this a day trip (approx. 4 hours each way).  Please feel free to invite family members and friends to come along (including men and boys)!

The Caverns are among the most beautiful in North America, and they have an excellent campground with bath house, electrical hookups, a gift shop, panning for gold, and more.  Here is a link with detailed information:  http://www.cavernsofsonora.com/index.php

When you RSVP, please let your RSVP number show how many will be in your group.  Also, please complete the brief questionnaire asking:  1) How many will be in your party?; 2) Will you be camping out on Saturday night?  This will help make sure that the Caverns staff reserves space for us on the campground and in the tour groups.

***Camping is $15/night for each tent; the tour costs $16/person.  Please note that we are required to pay up front as a group - I have to collect payment from everyone (for the tour only), and pay with my credit card when we arrive. Payment for the tour is due to me no later than the morning of our trip (cash, money order, or check made out to "Toni Snidow").  They handle camping registration separately, so you will pay your camping fee at the Caverns office.***

You will need to bring your own camping gear and food, as well.  We have a handy camping checklist posted in the discussion boards. :)

We will meet at La Madeleine in Sunset Valley at 8:30 AM to enjoy breakfast together before the trip, and to arrange for carpool groups, as desired.  I hope you'll be able to join us for what promises to be a fun and fabulous weekend!!

I am definitely ready to rock the next trip to Sonora. It was truly a wonderful event. My children are looking forward to a family trip in September of next year.

So wonderful!!! I loved everything about this trip. The cave looked like the cave in my very first Lower World Journeys! I have seen many caverns in my day, but Sonora had aspects that were very unique and magical. I enjoyed everyone so much. It was a blessing to have more time together without being rushed. Thank you Dear Toni for putting this together and organizing ...and Thank You All for being there and contributing your energy. I loved our experience together!

It was a truly magical event. The camaraderie and the caves who could ask for more.

What a fabulous weekend!! Every time I tour these magnificent caverns, I see something new and spectacular. We had perfect weather, our guide Bill Sawyer was amazing as always (and let us use his fire pit for our drum circle under the stars), and we shared great companionship....who could ask for more?!! :)

Cave gets six stars. OMG. Nice campground, too, and Bill the Guide is just as great this year.

Bad news! I won't be able to join you all tomorrow :( I'm so frustrated I could spit! But my schedule got reworked and there is no way around it. I was able to get past the first two obstacles to me going on this trip, but the third has put me out of the game. Maybe the universe is sending me a sign... or that damn mercury retrograde! Anyways, I'm sorry to miss out as I know how wonderful this trip is based on last years. I'm going to go sulk now :(

Aww, April - I'm so sorry that it didn't work out. :( We'll miss you!

Toni, I'm SO sad to be missing out! I'll miss you all too. I look forward to the pictures :)

It looks like I'm driving alone, so that means that I'll have to stop several times along the way for stretch breaks to avoid a pain "episode". That said, I think it's best if I skip the breakfast and take off for Sonora early, so that I don't get there late.

    November 8, 2013

    • Toni

Have a safe trip, Rosemary! We'll see you there...hopefully, we'll be getting there around 1 PM.

UPDATE - I am bringing a friend with me, so or headcount goes back up one for the caverns.....I still think it's better that I get an early start though, by skipping breakfast. ....my number is[masked]

I will not be able to go to this....again. :( I just do not have the equipment or the funds to partake this year. There is always next year.....I will be there in spirit. <3

    • Toni

Bridget, we'll miss you! Of course, as April mentioned below, it is possible to make this a day trip...several did that last year. It's about 3.5 hours each way.

I could ride with someone - I drove in September to Marfa, but my car is small. Of course, happy to share the gas, etc. I live real close to La Madaleine and could meet you there, then drive home and drop my car (in case I can ride with someone ;-)

    • Toni

Marina, if you want to attend, I have room in my car now (another member who was supposed to ride with me cancelled).

Toni, thank you, thank you - you are sweet! I would take your offer, but the reason I changed my rsvp is that I might have to start a new job on Monday. I would have to come back on Sunday early. So I think that in the end the best option would be to drive my own little car.
But I will keep you posted (I'll have an answer by tomorrow). I really want to go.

    Hi,
I'm bummed out but I decided to not go, it's going to be rough having to drive back so early on Sunday morning, but there's always next year. :-)
    Love you all,
    Dawn

We'll miss you, Dawn! Hope to see you soon!

Dawn, you can also just go for a day trip if you don't want to stay over. It's just another option.

It turns out that I'll have room in my little Fiesta for anyone who needs to carpool. Also, I have an extra tent available.

    November 7, 2013

  • April

I want to camp out because it was so fun last time, but I no longer have a tent or sleeping bag. I may have to cancel if I don't find any camping gear :(

April - I had to check to make sure but I have 2 tents and 2 sleeping bags so you are covered. - Kolanna

Hi, this is Lynn Beggs my life is just too hectic for the trip this weekend.
Hope my canceling will allow someone else to take my place.
Miss you all and hope all are well. Take Care, Lynn

Lynn, we'll miss you! Hope to see you soon!

I'm trying to find out what else I would need before I can commit. I can sleep in the back of my crossover, so I don't actually need a tent. (if that's acceptable)? I have sleeping bags and a flashlight and a little bit of firewood to contribute and of course my food and some to share. What I don't have is coleman lanterns and ???? I'm going to sign up and plan on going, I may have to cancel too, if sleeping in my car is not an option. :(

    November 5, 2013

    • Toni

Rosemary, you should be fine. Be sure to also bring some drinking water...even though there is a bath house, you will want some extra water for drinking. Several of us will have lanterns, etc. Don't worry about the firewood - any cooking will be done on Coleman stoves. We won't be having a regular fire on the ground. I'm personally not planning to cook anything; I'll be bringing sandwich fixings, fruit, granola bars, etc. There is a camping checklist posted in our message boards section that is very useful. Hope to see you on Saturday! :)

I know that Kolanna (Lynn) is planning to bring her big stove.

I do plan to meet at La Madeleine at 8:30 on Saturday. I will be coming from North Austin off 183 & Oak Knoll Drive. I am driving a Prius and would be happy to offer a ride to anyone coming from this part of town.

    2 · November 4, 2013

    • Marina P.

Barbara, could I ride with you? Of course, if you still have room. I could drive my own car, but it's small... And I recently drive by myself to Marfa, wouldn't like to drive by myself again.

Eleigh, they want me to call them by October 23 with a tentative headcount for the tours & camping.
