Women's Circles, Story and Oral Tradition

Before we could read or write, women told stories. “Old wives tales,” oral history, and passing the talking stick at circle all speak to the way women shared information. Today, many groups similar to ours gather for community, celebration and learning. The desire to gather is in our DNA and it wants to come alive again because when women gather, history is not lost, consciousness and healing happen, and the medicine of culture changes from toxic to tonic. We’ll look at some of the history of women’s stories, sample the literature, and some unique ways we can work with and share story for healing, direction and clarity.

Following the discussion, we will take a shamanic drum journey to allow each woman to work on personal issues with her Spirit guides. Please dress comfortably, and feel free to bring drums, rattles or other instruments, along with a journal for recording any insights received on your journey. Doors open at 7:00 pm and close at 7:30 pm, and ends at 10:00 pm. Please RSVP to ensure your space. Suggested donation of $10.00 per person to cover the space rental. Come join us for a fun and powerful exploration!

We will be meeting in the Serena Room at Casa de Luz. Some backjacks, folding chairs, pillows and yoga blankets will be available. If possible, you might want to bring your own pillow or blanket to help make sure that you're comfy during the circle, especially if you plan to journey lying down on the floor. You might also want to bring a light wrap or sweater in case the AC is acting up! :) Several of us will be having dinner at 6 PM in Casa's restaurant, so feel free to join us for dinner before the circle!  (Reminder:  It is OK to park in the City lots across the street in spite of the "no parking" signs posted there.  The City has an agreement with Casa, at least for now.)

JUST got home after a very long day, and I don't think I can head out again right away. I hate to miss this...I miss you all so much! But in the interest on the road safety, I think I am going to have to pass. Catherine is so tired she said she would fall asleep during journey...and I wouldn't be far behind! I will be planning better in the future to make sure I can make it!

I appreciate Robins enthusiasm and support for me but I come to learn as there is always something new to learn. I would be happy to tell a story if called but equally happy to listen to the stories of others. I am just excited about the event!

Lorene, it's wonderful to know that you are with us. I am not a storyteller, per se, but the concept takes many forms. This particular evening won't be so much an exchange of stories but it is a wonderful idea for a future circle. Sisters almost always chime in on what the host is offering -- it's rare if we don't. As you said, we all have knowledge so it is encouraged in this circle, as you will see. All that is fortifying and enlivening is welcomed but time runs out quickly, especially with a large group. I'm sure you've read about the group and our practice. Toni leads us in a brief drum journey at every circle and we do work in sacred space. With all this in mind, we will hoist our sails for the best outcome for all involved. Again, I'm very happy to know you've joined and can't wait to meet you.

I see that Lorene Stilwell, a professional Celtic storyteller has signed up for the evening. Perhaps she would honor us with a story.

Yes, Lorene is an exciting addition to WSWC. If we have time, we'll ask her. If not, perhaps we can schedule a real storytelling circle for early next year.

Well, she usually likes a bit of advance notice. But I'm certain that she would be willing to do a workshop for the group or just plain tell stories. She focuses on women's stories and is a feminist. It's so much fun to hear her tell the ancient myths from the women's and goddesses points of view.
