Rhythm of Life: Observing the Seasons

** Meet in the Garden Room at Soma Vida **

Our ancestors knew everything about their environment, from local plants, to the timing of Moon and Sun, and behavior of animals.  In this quarterly circle, learn to observe the natural world, and experience a connection with the divine and life force.  We can learn together and share local, seasonal information, in the tradition of our foremothers.

Emphasis for Rhythm of Life circle will be on observing the Moon, her cycles, folklore; seasonal positions of the Sun; how to observe and record the habit of plants and wildlife that indicate changes in weather, seasons; and participate in a silent conversation with life force, with or without a backyard garden.

Winter:  first season for gardeners and observation of the dark of the year through the resting phase of land, plants and wildlife around us.  Seasonal foods, plants, health practices, and aromatics.  How other cultures have observed the seasons by naming the year of Moon cycles.  Address ethical concerns around wildcrafting, and the observation and recording of wild plant information; how to record information about plants without picking them.  Learn to observe your garden’s microclimate, if you have a garden plot, and how to find seeds and plan a garden.  Learn how to find a garden to share or utilize a sunny apartment porch.  Learn how to visually distinguish poison ivy from similar plants.

Should you be further interested in plants, on the Sunday following each circle, there will be an opportunity to observe local plants in the field, in an expedition lead by Morwen Lome.  To commence the program this winter, we’ll meet indoors to:  set up a garden observation book (no backyard required), and a Hortus siccus (plant library), including how to press plants and record your observations; how to describe plants by their physical attributes, in botanical terms; and a little of the history of Latinized binomial plant names.  One private residence session, and one library meeting room session will be posted soon for the garden books and pressed plants.

A journey will follow the seasonal circle.  Please dress comfortably, and feel free to bring drums, rattles or other instruments, along with a journal for recording any insights received on your journey.

Doors open at 7:00 pm and close at 7:30 pm, and ends at 10:00 pm. Please RSVP to ensure your space. Suggested donation of $10.00 per person to cover the space rental. Come join us for this fun and interesting exploration!

So sorry, but I have the flu. I was really looking forward to tonight, but I sound like a refuge from a TB ward, and no one will want me there. I"m removing my RSVP for tonight.

Did you tell him you're about to go to the store? ; ) I agree with all that you said. The culture is made less toxic by what we share. We are blessed with an exceptional group of women. I'm honored to share what I love with you all.

Sadly, since I'm going to be dealing with shingles for the next couple of weeks or so, I think it's best for me to keep my cooties to myself. I'm so disappointed to miss this gathering - I'll definitely be there in Spirit!

You may want to bring something to write on, in case you don't want to use your journey journal for the seasonal material. I'll post some things online but there's too much to post it all. See you tomorrow night. Donna

Tiaras can also be New Years tiaras, floral head wreaths, ribbon, or even a cool necklace along the hairline (crown) and secured with bobby pins.:)

So sorry, Toni! How are you feeling? Have been sending healing energy to you--what else can I do to help?

    2 · December 30, 2013

    • Toni

Thank you, Diane! The healing energy is much appreciated. All things considered, I'm doing pretty well. I'm actually at work this week, since I'm the only one in our Austin business office for a few days. I'm a bit uncomfortable, but not too bad, thankfully. It just seems like a good idea to limit my public exposure right now, for the good of anyone who might be susceptible.

Hi! In the description it says there is a follow up Sunday session for this circle? When is that and where do I RSVP for it?:)

    December 29, 2013

    • Donna

You are registered, Beautiful, for Sunday, February 16. xo

      December 29, 2013

  • Diane S.

Hey, ladies, I'm really excited that this will be my first chance to attend a Circle. I own a native plant landscape business, and I'm a naturalist and a birder, so this meeting will be a perfect one for me to start with! I look forward to meeting all of you!
