Wheel of the Year: Imbolc

The festival of Imbolc on February 1 (or 2) celebrates the strengthening Sun and the stirrings of new life in nature. To the ancient Celts, this day marked the beginning of Spring and honored their powerful solar goddess, Brighid, who is known as the goddess of poetry, smithcraft and healing. She is the "fire in the head" who inspires us to manifest our dreams in physical "ordinary" reality!

Brighid was so beloved by the Irish people that attempts by Christian missionaries to abolish Her worship failed, and She was renamed "St. Bridget" and Her holiday became known as Candlemas. Her shrine at the old Druid grove of Kildare (Cill Dara = Church of the Oak) was maintained by 19 priestesses originally, and later by 19 nuns, and featured a perpetual flame that burned for over 1,000 years until the Reformation in the 1500s. (It was relit in 1993 by the Brigidine Sisters in Kildare.)

In harmony with the new life seen in early snowdrops and crocuses, and the birth of lambs and other domestic animals, this holiday has traditionally been a time of Initiation into neoPagan groups and is considered one of the most auspicious times for starting a new venture of any sort, so be thinking about what you'd like to "birth" in this new year. Please dress comfortably, and feel free to bring drums, rattles or other instruments, along with a journal for recording any insights received on your journey.

Doors open at 7:00 pm and close at 7:30 pm, and ends at 11:00 pm (ritual circles run a little longer than usual). Please RSVP to ensure your space. Suggested donation of $10.00 per person to cover the space rental. Come join us for this powerful exploration!

We will be meeting in the Serena Room at Casa de Luz. Some backjacks, folding chairs, pillows and yoga blankets will be available. If possible, you might want to bring your own pillow or blanket to help make sure that you're comfy during the circle, especially if you plan to journey lying down on the floor. You might also want to bring a light wrap or sweater in case the AC is acting up! :) Several of us will be having dinner at 6 PM in Casa's restaurant, so feel free to join us for dinner before the circle! [Note: Just a reminder that it is OK to park in the City of Austin lot across the street, even though "No Parking" signs are posted. The City & Casa have an agreement for now, so you won't get towed.]

Toni, thank you for holding such an enlightening, healing space. This was one of the most memorable Sabbats of the past two years. Was particularly delighted to make a (what I call) parshell and will put it up this morning. Powerful journey. Positive energy from all the beautiful sisters. Thank you, Toni.
