OK, I've done some more thinking about this:

 

1.       wp-admin/error_log is showing line with PHP Fatal error:  Call to undefined function woocommerce_product_loop_start() in /home/plastic2go/public_html/wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/includes/class-wc-shortcodes.php on line 403".  It's a weird one, because the function is most certainly defined in the plugin, but I'm using some significant WC addons, so it may not happen to everyone

2.       I've seen a problem with theme customisation on WP 4.1 and the latest Jetpack, so if you're using Jetpack, take note.

3.       When saving a post, I get a blank page, although the post is saved
