Meetup Update

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had an enjoyable Memorial Day holiday. During your cookouts and picnics at area lakes or beaches, maybe you took a moment to remember those soldiers who have served our country.

I wanted to take a moment to give everyone an update on the status of Wordpress Chapel Hill. Last week, I began calling around the Chapel Hill area to secure a meeting space that is suitable for the presentation format that, I believe, gives everyone a chance to learn something that they didn't know before, or contribute to the shared knowledge of the group through participation.

I've never been one to organize Meetups at a bar or restaurant, where it's less about the content and more about being social and networking. While I think it's wonderful that people want to get together outside of the meeting format of Wordpress Chapel Hill to talk shop over drinks or a meal, it's my goal to keep the Wordpress Chapel Hill Meetup more professional development and practical training and not a social event. To me, it waters down the purpose of the group and it loses its focus.

I called the new Chapel Hill Public Library and they have not yet gotten approval from the town to start using the conference rooms. They also don't yet have their scheduling system set up on their website. It will probably be 30 to 90 days before they finalize their plans, which prevents us from being able to use the space for the time being.

In April, I was supposed to get together with a friend from UNC Chapel Hill, who was going to speak to ITS about sponsoring the event with a meeting space. Unfortunately, we didn't connect, but I'm going to reach out to him again this week.

My only concern about UNC, first and foremost, is parking. My second concern is access to the building. We had enjoyed space at the Health Sciences Library, but the woman who was supporting us there could no longer assist in scheduling the space.

There are conference rooms at OWASA, which is pretty far out on MLK. And, there are conference rooms at City Hall. I tried calling last week, but haven't gotten to the person yet to learn about what we would need to do. Many of the town spaces have a fee associated with them and I'd prefer that we find a space for no fee.

I'm going to try my best to make some calls this week, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Lastly, one of WP Chapel Hill members contacted me today to ask if I'd be interested in partnering with her on WP Chapel Hill. Her stated goal was to not only do a presentation driven format, but also meet for drinks and socialize. Because I want to keep the format presentation driven, with professional development and learning the primary driver, I wished her the best. So, if you see a new Wordpress Meetup come online in Chapel Hill over the next few weeks, I hope you'll support her offering as well.

If we can get together in June, that would be a great plan. I'd love to share with you a project we did for a building management company in New York, that uses Pagelines responsive framework along with a combined plugin for four different custom post types. It's pretty cool. And, I would love to share with all of you the new Neighborbee site on BuddyPress, which should be launching on June 10.
