The York Butter Factory

Hot on the heels of the last one, and after such a positive response, let's make this a regular thing... and on the 1st Thursday as well.

For venue this time we're going to the York Butter Factory - it's a slightly less socially conducive venue as 1000£Bend, but less noisy, and while we've another place to consider, this month is Comedy Festival and alternate venues are few and far between!! SO, let's see how we go with York, and we'll find somewhere for drinks afterwards, for sure.

We're going to start the evening with a short talk and then break into interest groups with a facilitator in each one to help talk through any issues you're having or to demonstrate/workshop some useful tips and tricks. Then when we're done, depending on venue we'll take off for drinks/dinner somewhere. If you're keen to facilitate, let me know!

I see these breakout groups as Users/Bloggers, people keen to tweak their theme a bit, and people wanting to get more into code stuff. So, three groups. If you think you'd like to facilitate a group, let me know, and please note which of these categories will fit you on your RSVP - it will help shape the night!

So I happened to be in Belfast airport about a year ago and stumbled upon a magazine Wordpress guide for beginners. Randomly brought it, forgot I had it and found it yesterday. So I just thought I'd pass it on, it's called the Wordpress Genius Guide, and I think its kinda cool

Hey guys, At the last wordchicks meet-up there was a conversation about the costs for adding your own domain to Wordpress.com. If you log into your Wordpress.com site and go to the store menu there's an option to register a domain for $5 and to map that domain for $13 per year. You don't have to go for the full pro package if you don't need it.

  I did this for one of my clients and it means that both the domain name and the hosting is with the one company. It goes through Wild West Domains and then when I tried to move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org on the own server, it was extremely difficult to change the Domain Name Server to the new one - and transferring it to a new domain provider took WEEKS.
  
  My recommendation is, sign up for WordPress.com if you want the free hosting option but a the same time, register a domain name through another provider (I usually use www.crazydomains.com.au because it is cheap) and then change the DNS to WordPress.com and get WordPress.com to map it as well.
  
  All of the content you create on WordPress.com can be exported to WordPress.org in the future HOWEVER, it is important to save all of your images separately so that they can be re-used.
  
  I am not a definitive expert on all of this, but I do want to let people know NOT to register their domain name with WordPress.com.

  This is interesting!
  I've always just self-hosted Wordpress (as in, found my own hosting, not used Wordpress.com)
  I like the added control... my current hosting plan is only $3.95 per month through Host365, and it has plenty of feature and also allows me to do other things with the space other than just Wordpress.
  I register my domains through GoDaddy.com (although you can find even cheaper), and just have the DNS point to my hosting provider :)

Thanks for coming guys, I'm really stoked so many of you came and participated!!

Next month we'll start a little later to give people a chance to get there after work, and if they need to, to grab a bite on the way there.

We had a drink or two at the Harp and Grace behind York and it was great, so we'll make socialising a part of the gig for next time!!

Keep an eye on the board, I'll let you know when the next one's scheduled for. It's due the week after WordCamp... I'm sure there'll be plenty of buzz post WordCamp, we should capitalise on that!! (if WordCamp hasn't killed me...)

  Sorry Matt, we understand it's a bit of a headache, and at the moment we can't actually filter invites by gender (not that we're terribly comfortable asking people those kinds of details when they sign up.)
  
  We have very specifically chosen not to be a separate group from the Melbourne User Group as I consider WordChicks very much to be a part of that wider group. The purpose behind this smaller break out is all for building its users up in order to strengthen the wider group in the long run.
  
  So, while I am sorry the one extra invite a month may be irritating, I hope you can see that the bigger purpose is one that benefits us all, and a small inconvenience is a small price to pay for what will be a better than ever WordPress community.

  You can easily change your settings to exclude certain notifications from the group. In fact I think you are only supposed to get notifications of comments for events you've either RSVP'd to, or you have previously commented on (like this one).
