WordChicks March - Creating a Local Server Environment for WordPress

Face it... you saw that title and got a bit freaked out, right?

No need to fear! This month's WordChicks is going to get a little bit techy, but it's also going to give you a local (on your laptop) WordPress playground that will help you get way more confident tinkering around under the hood of a WordPress Site.

We will be running through the process of installing and configuring a local server environment that runs an instance of WordPress on your own machine, without needing to be connected to the web. A number of you have thought you'd like to give this a go... so now's your chance!! I'll take you through the tools to make this happen and we'll quickly set up an offline WordPress and empower you to do the same on your machine at home.

We'll be meeting at the same time, in the same place, on the same Thursday of the month as usual and I'm really looking forward to seeing you there!

6:00 Arrive, chit chat, get comfy (know anyone who'd like to sponsor some food or drinks? Maybe you'd like to? Let me know and we'll see what we can do!!)

6:30 News, and Upcoming Events

6:40 Presentation on Creating a Local Server Environment - Dee Teal

7:30 Wrap up and Tidy Up

7:45 Drinks and nibbles at the Hare and Grace.

See you there!

Dee

About WordChicks

-------------------------------------------------------------------

WordChicks is a chapter of the Melbourne WordPress User Group that is specifically created for, run by, and tutored by women.

We do this not for any reasons of exclusivity but to provide an inviting place where women can gain confidence in their web production, development, blogging and site management skills, and in sharing those skills with the wider group.

We do not currently restrict entry to the meetup by gender, but we simply ask that all those who attend, male and female alike respect our mandate that this group exists to inspire women to more confidence in contributing both to this group, and the wider WordPress project as a whole.

Maybe a bit too many interruptions for very personal questions...

Whooopsy, I didn't know my comment was to appear right here, in full public view! Sorry for complaining! The content of the meeting was seriously helpful though and that's exactly what I needed to help me work on a new website - on the side line. Thanks Dee! See you next time!

Thanks Dee. As a beginner it was interesting to hear all the jargon. I second Nga's comments - Congrats!

Apologies for being a no show. My computer had a seizure around 6.15pm just before I was heading up. After an hour of stress, problem turned out to be my wireless mouse in my backpack clicking and stuck down or something so my laptop was semi 'out of control' for a while. Annoyed as this would have been a great session.
Thanks for offering this useful session Dee.

I didn't really introduce myself in my RSVP but I'm Layla and totally new to ALL of this but excited to come and be open to all the new and inspiring ways that WordPress can empower my vision for my work. So glad you're providing a space for women too - a little less intimidating for a - fresh to web development and all this tech stuff - girl. There's a high probability 90% of this will go straight over my head, but the 10% I can comprehend will be of so much value! Haha.

Look forward to meeting you all.

Is anyone against about bringing your child? (Mine is almost 7 & is USUALLY well behaved)

    1 · March 31, 2014

    • Dee T.

Hi Cheyenne, I'm not opposed to it, so long as they're not disruptive or causing too much distraction.

Ty. I'm not for certain yet because I know I become hyper aware of her & it gets hard for me to concentrate lol. I just hate missing all these meetups!

    Hi Dee,
I'm curious to understand why you would do this (local server environment) & what are the benefits.

    Thanks.

    March 24, 2014

    • Dee T.

The local server is just for you, it isn't open to the web. This is about creating an environment where you can play, experiment and tweak your site to your heart's content without affecting things on a live working website. If when you've finished your site and it's ready to be a live site, then we need to migrate your site to a server. That's when you can have other people involved with it.

    • Cheyenne

Awesome!! I've made quite a few oppsies that I don't know how to undue so having that "safe space" wld be great

      March 31, 2014

  • Robyn

    Cant wait.
Will we also cover taking the site from the live to local and back again?.....I got broken at this stage!

    March 24, 2014

    • Dee T.

Yep, I'll probably run over it with something like backup buddy which is how I do it, but I'll look out any other possible different ways to migrate the site too.

    March 14, 2014
